Abstract

Tulisan ini menyelidiki bagaimana pengetahuan pertanian diproduksi dan disirkulasikan di Hindia Belanda (1817-1942). Seluruh proses penulisan, dari pengumpulan data hingga analisis dari tulisan ini menggunakan metode sejarah. Tulisan ini membuktikan bahwa Model Basalla, yang mengatakan bahwa pengetahuan modern dimulai di Barat dan kemudian didifusikan ke wilayah lain (koloni) secara satu arah serta menempatkan orang-orang nonEropa sebagai pihak yang pasif menerima, benar secara sebagian. Pada mulanya, di Hindia Belanda, pengetahuan hanya dikembangkan oleh para ilmuwan Eropa. Sirkulasi sebagian besar merupakan proses satu arah. Pergeseran akhirnya terjadi selama periode Politik Etis, yang dipromosikan sebagai “kolonialisme yang layak.” Meskipun kebijakan tersebut memasukkan pendidikan sebagai salah satu tujuan utamanya, pemerintah tidak memiliki rencana untuk meningkatkan peran intelektual penduduk koloni sebagai produsen pengetahuan. Tulisan ini juga menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan pertanian disebarkan melalui lahan demonstrasi, sekolah pertanian, Departemen Pertanian yang baru didirikan, dan publikasi resmi dari Layanan Informasi Pertanian. Dapat dilihat dengan jelas bahwa penduduk lokal tetap menjadi kelompok pasif dalam sebagian besar proses ini.

Abstract

Language is the one of many tools by which humans express ideas, images, and understanding of the world. However, the position of language between mind and world remains unclear. The question arises on whether language affects the way humans perceive the reality around them or, on the contrary, the reality that affects people's thoughts about the world. This article aims to examine the issue of language position between the mind and the world by conducting a comparative study of the Linguistic Relativity Principle offered by Benjamin Lee Whorf and the Language Game proposed by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Literature study was carried out by examining Wittgenstein's magnum opus Philosophical Investigations and Whorf's influential work Language, Thought and Reality. This article finds that the position of language is not between the mind and the world, but both transcends and encompasses them The key between thought and reality, mind and world, is the two-way relationship that is governed by it.

Abstract

Language is one of the tools humans use to express ideas, thoughts, images, and understandings about the world. However, the position of language between thoughts and the reality of the world observed through our five senses is not yet clear. The question is whether language influences the way humans view the reality around them, or if, on the other hand, reality influences humans' thoughts about the world. This paper seeks to explain the issue of language's position between thoughts and the world by comparing the concepts of the Principle of Linguistic Relativity proposed by Benjamin Lee Whorf and Language Games introduced by Ludwig Wittgenstein. Literature studies were conducted by examining Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations and works that influenced Whorf's Language, Thought, and Reality. This paper concludes that the position of language is not between thoughts and the reality of the world, but rather encompasses and bridges both. The key to understanding this relationship lies in the two-way interaction that language regulates. This reciprocal mechanism is often overlooked in language learning and neglecting the fact that language can shape each individual’s perspective of the world. Realities are seen in many ways, as many as languages used to perceive them.
