Abstract

The purpose of this study was to illustrate how visual tools for learning can be used to teach listening. Due to the teacher's lack of variety in the teaching approach, many students struggled to understand the overall idea, specific details, and inference. When teaching listening, the instructor needs to be adept at selecting engaging teaching tools. The main mapping was one of the visual learning tools since it had the potential to add excitement to the learning process. This research was both descriptive and quantitative. The 73 second-semester students from STIT Madani Yogyakarta served as the research subjects. An observation guide and a questionnaire were employed in this study to gather data, which were subsequently subjected to descriptive quantitative analysis and percentage calculations. The examination of observational data revealed that the main mapping as a visual tool for teaching listening increased student engagement and made the lesson enjoyable. Strong support for using YouTube with the main mapping to teach listening was observed in the study, which involved 73 students. 83.8% said it was simpler to absorb complex information, and 84.9% felt it helped identify important information. Main mapping enhanced learning retention, according to 63% of respondents. Main mapping made elaborating ideas easier for 97.16% of respondents, and 98.6% said it made listening lessons in the classroom more successful. The students felt more delighted, engaged, and passionate, and it was easier to assist their listening comprehension throughout the learning process.

Abstract

To be able to enhance and support of English skills, learners previously have to master vocabulary. In contrast, students consider and see English as a foreign language that is not understood, unused, and feared. Beside, they easily forget the newly learned words that have been taught. Those are mostly problem that are faced of students in learning vocabulary. The objectives of this research are finding out whether: (1) mnemonic is more effective than direct instruction to teach vocabulary; (2) the students having high creativity have better vocabulary mastery than those having low creativity; (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and creativity in teaching vocabulary. This research was an experimental study.

Abstract

The English status of a Foreign Language (FL) in Indonesia has been granted. However, the language has become quite popular and dominant in several schools in Indonesia, especially in private colleges and universities. The study aimed was to find out the male-female English foreign language (EFL) students’ attitudes and perceptions toward learning English and female and male students’ difficulties in learning English. The data was collected from 30 Islamic at the first student’s semester at STITMA Yogyakarta. Data collecting techniques used in this research were through a set of close-ended questioners. The study used a qualitative and quantitative resign design. The research finding revealed that male and female Islamic education students have positive attitudes and perceptions to learn English although the male students had lower enthusiasm to gain their knowledge in learning English than female students. Both (male and female students) perceived learning English was important not only for their future life but also for spreading Islam around the world. The female and male students had similar obstacles in pronunciation and vocabulary mastery. Moreover, most female students thought that speaking skills were the most difficult skill, while most male students consider listening was the most difficult skill to learn.

Abstract

In this disrupted era, technology affects all aspects of human life, particularly education. Reading website is one of the online materials that can motivate and assist students and lecturers in the teaching-learning process. Islamic reading websites improve students' reading comprehension skills and encouragement of students’ Islamic values. The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of Islamic reading websites articles as authentic material in teaching reading comprehension of the third-semester students at STIT Madani Yogyakarta. The qualitative research method was used in this study. This study was carried out on the third-semester students. The collecting of data was obtained through observations and interviews. Based on the research, using Islamic websites as useful sources of information can help students improve their English skills. Furthermore, students' reading performance and Islamic values were constantly improved by their use of Islamic websites.

Abstract

English Language Teaching has spread to most institutions in Indonesia, including in Pesantren. This spread has resulted in certain challenges because English has been a compulsory subject for pesantren ‘s students. The present study investigated the teaching challenge and strategies to develop EFL Pesantren’s Students. In conducting the study, a literature review was conducted. Teaching English to pesantren students provides both challenges and strategies. Regarding the issue, this article identifies the challenges based on theories and research findings and then proposes several strategies for the difficulties which can be the references for pesantren institutions in English teaching and learning.
