Abstract

Kata Kunci: COVID-19, literasi budaya dan kewargaan, mendongeng, PkM, siswa TPA   ABSTRACT AlQuran Education Park (TPA) has a variety of religious and public activities such as reading and writing the AlQuran, including sports. However, these activities are still considered inadequate and less specific in instilling cultural and citizenship literacy. Thus, additional learning activities can fulfil this need. As a solution, storytelling is an effective medium for students' cultural and citizenship literacy. Storytelling can be an alternative activity to stimulate creativity to work for both educators and students during the pandemic. In addition, the choice of a theme that carries the importance of cleanliness is also significant for students. This Community Services (PkM) were attended by students from kindergarten and elementary school ages 1-3. From the analysis of the results of the PkM, the students seriously and enthusiastically took part in the activities, they could demonstrate good storytelling, and therefore could practice how to clean their faces and hands, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords: COVID-19, cultural and citizenship literacy, PkM, storytelling, TPA students

Abstract

Picture books, as one of the genres in children’s literature, have been produced and reproduced with a wide range of themes: relationships (family and friendship), emotions (accepting and compassion), behaviors (generosity, persistence), life transition (growing up, grief) and more. Picture books promote social-emotional literacy – how to behave and interact with humans and the environment – and display multimodal narrative techniques – verbal and visual texts. Research has proved that using picture books in formal classes for young learners helps in vocabulary acquisition. Moreover, the enchanting stories of picture books elevate the moral of understanding diversities. This study used library research to discuss how picture books promote literacy and how narrative styles build social emotional learning. Several sample picture books by Anna Kang were examined in terms of aspects of language play, such as the use of verbal and visual texts and the social issues they represented. The discussion exposes picture books as a medium that encourages social-emotional literacy.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: film fiksi, perundungan, pendidikan karakter, remaja Nurul Ashri ABSTRACT As in other nations, bullying incidents occur in various settings in Indonesia. Bullies frequently engage in direct confrontational bullying with their victims. Nonetheless, they can also engage in cyberbullying, which is rising due to technology advancements and students’ widespread use of social media. This phenomenon illustrates several crucial issues, including that bullying can occur physically or via social media and often involves physical and verbal abuse. Therefore, empowering character-building for students can be essential to stopping bullying. A fictional film can be a powerful tool for communicating the significance of education in preventing bullying and raising awareness of this issue. To provide anti-bullying counseling to the youths of Nurul Ashri, Depok, the English Literature Department of Universitas Pamulang organized a community service – a series of events, including the screening of a fictional movie, interactive talks, and the creation of digital posters. These activities are considered community service’s ultimate and long-term objectives.  Keywords: bullying, character-building, fictional film, the youths of Nurul Ashri

Abstract

The issue of the environmental problem has been prevalent especially in the contemporary era. The fact that Mother Earth is currently facing a lot of environmental concerns is the central discussion of the selected children’s picture books. Hence, this study aims to analyze how the picture books successfully capture the idea that trees are the symbol of Mother Earth per se. The selected picture books to be discussed are: A Tree is Nice by Janice May Udry (1984), The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein (1992), Red Knit Cap Girl and The Reading Tree by Naoko Stoop (2014), Seasons Come, Seasons Go: Tree by Patricia Hegarty (2015) and The Tree by Neil Layton (2016). By scrutinizing the narrative and illustrative elements of the picture books, this study sheds light on how the ecosystems are held together by trees. The trees play a vital role in balancing and maintaining the world’s ecosystems. Moreover, the trees are valuable for providing environmental and social benefits. Hence, taking care of the trees can be perceived as maintaining a sustainable life for both the living and nonliving things. The underlying theories to support the discussion are those of ecocriticism, narrative and illustrative elements, and the trees as metaphor of Mother Earth, all of which are interconnected in children’s picture books.

Abstract

This study, entitled “Gender and Religious Identity: Intersecting Axes of Discrimination in The Breadwinner Animated Movie (2017)”, highlights the importance of conceptualizing gender discrimination related to religious identity as inherently shaped by society. By employing the library research method and intersectional theoretical perspectives, this study examines how gender and religious identity are inextricably linked to portray the main character’s experiences of discrimination. The analysis begins with narrative and illustrative data showing how the main character’s background as a daughter and Muslim results in multiple layers of discrimination. Her gender and religious affiliation substantially influence the discrimination. Moreover, bias varies for men and women of different age groups. The main character experiences more discrimination as a teenage girl than her disguised character as a teenage boy. Women are significantly more likely to face gender discrimination than men, but girls are enormous. Hence, this concurrent examination of the main character’s gender and religious identity reveals that she is characterized by high rates of discrimination throughout her childhood; in a way, teenage boys are not. The main character’s experience of discrimination highlights the importance of conceptualizing gender and religious identity as intersecting axes of discrimination

Abstract

Fictional movies captivated the audience in many ways through their stories and audio-visual. The stories of fictional movies often reflect what happens to our society, and we savor the purification of the hero's tragic flaw. One of which is power relations between males and females. This study explores women's empowerment in Oshin the movie (2013). The narrative is about a seven-year-old girl called Oshin, who is made to work as a maid by her father due to the family's poverty. At first, she is against her father's idea of being separated from her family. She struggles to become a maid until she is accused of stealing and runs away. By watching her mother's efforts as the household pillar, she finally realizes the importance of being an independent female. The movie shows power relations issues regarding filial duty and social stratification. Yet, with the help of Foucault's theory of The Subject and Power (1982), power resistance is a more eloquent outcome to discuss. Thus, this study proposes the stages of power resistance and how the protagonist declares her resilience through traditional gender roles. Moreover, this study uses an interpretative method by scrutinizing each scene that shows power resistance; the discussion reveals that Oshin participates in staging power resistance for women's economic empowerment, which subsequently contributes to her family's economic development. This study concludes that financial independence and women's empowerment are inextricably linked.
