Abstract

ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic situation requires educational institutions in Indonesia to implement a distance learning system. The use of technology, especially the internet, as a medium for distance learning is essential to accelerate the results of teaching and learning activities for both educators and students. In the context of Community Service, several lecturers, and students of the English Literature at Universitas Pamulang held an online seminar entitled “Digital Literacy in the Pandemic Era: the Use of Fables to Enhance the Character Building” which was attended by educators of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Jam’iyyatul Khair. The online seminar introduced Kahoot! as a platform for interactive online learning. The event has helped the participants escalate their digital literacy skills. Moreover, the knowledge gained through this event optimistically creating new enthusiasm in developing the motivation for teaching and learning during the pandemic. Keywords: Fabel, Digital Literacy, Kahoot!, and Pandemic  ABSTRAK Situasi pandemi COVID-19 mengharuskan institusi pendidikan di Indonesia untuk menerapkan sistem pembelajaran jarak jauh. Pemanfaatan teknologi internet sebagai media pembelajaran jarak jauh, dengan demikian, sangat diperlukan sebagai penunjang dalam peningkatan hasil kegiatan belajar mengajar baik bagi pendidik dan peserta didik. Dalam rangka Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat, beberapa dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang mengadakan seminar daring dengan topik “Literasi Digital di Era Pandemi: Fabel sebagai Materi Pembentukan Karakter Siswa” yang diikuti oleh para pendidik di Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Jam’iyyatul Khair. Seminar daring tersebut memperkenalkan Kahoot! sebagai salah satu aplikasi digital yang dapat digunakan untuk pembelajaran interaktif secara daring. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini yaitu adanya peningkatan keterampilan peserta dalam hal literasi digital. Pengetahuan yang diperoleh melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat menciptakan semangat baru dalam meningkatkan motivasi belajar mengajar di masa pandemi.  Kata kunci: Fabel, Literasi Digital, Kahoot!, dan Pandemi

Abstract

This study aims to analyze altruistic behavior represented in three selected picture books. All three picture books have a common thread in building children's awareness of helping others and entering into the discussion of altruistic behavior. The objects of this study are three picture books entitled Little Miss Mary and the Big Monster Makeover by G.G. Toropov and Cleone Cassidy (2008), Harold Loves His Woolly Hat by Vern Kousky (2018), and My Brother's Wheelchair by Salil Chaturvedi (2019). The researchers conducted qualitative research by examining the image of pictures and the texts available in the picture books. The data were collected through close reading and content analysis, focusing on both textual and visual narratives. According to Ary et al. (2010), close reading in literature involves examining the formal elements. In doing so, the researchers use the theory of Ricard (2015) as the basis of the results of the analysis, which then finds this altruistic behavior related to the discussion. By observing the plot in the story and exploring the implicit message of the author in fostering social awareness in children as readers, these three picture books instill understanding to help others without asking for reciprocity and are only based on a simple desire oneself to help others selflessly.

Abstract

Salah satu tujuan belajar berbahasa Inggris adalah agar dapat berkomunikasi dan berkompetisi dengan orang-orang yang berasal dari negara lain di era globalisasi ini. Kemampuan bahasa Inggris meliputi empat keterampilan, yaitu mendengarkan, membaca, berbicara, dan menulis. Salah satu aspek pendukung ke empat keterampilan tersebut adalah berbicara dengan Bahasa Inggris dimana kemampuan berbicara Berbahasa Inggris ini dibutuhkan untuk bisa berkomunikasi verbal dengan para penutur asing agar lebih mudah beradaptasi. Mengasah kemampuan berbicara disini akan coba diterapkan pada salah satu TPQ As-Syauki yang notabene pesertanya adalah siswa SD tingkat akhir dan SMP. Para peserta TPQ inilah yang sedang banyak kebutuhan belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris untuk jenjang sekolah dan komunikasi sehari-harinya. TPQ yang terletak di Jalan Masjid Ciater, Tangerang Selatan merupakan salah satu lembaga pendidikan agama yang dikelola oleh Yayasan Pena Al-Karim. Yayasan ini memiliki mimpi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Arab dan Bahasa lainnya bagi para peserta didiknya. Namun, berdasarkan hasil observasi yang dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa peserta didik disini baru bisa beradaptasi dengan pembelajaran Bahasa Arab dan kajian fikih islam lainnya sedangkan mereka kesulitan dalam mempelajari kemampuan bahasa Inggris karena terkendala oleh penguasaan cara berbicara yang masih sangat minim. Setelah melakukan PkM, tim kami terjun dan menawarkan solusi permasalahan berupa pengajaran menggunakan video untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara berbahasa Inggris dengan lantang. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi lisan, terjadi peningkatan kemampuan berbicara sebesar rata-rata 38% dibandingkan dengan sebelum pelatihan, yang terlihat dari peningkatan keberanian, kelancaran pengucapan, dan jumlah kosakata yang digunakan oleh peserta

Abstract

Honorifics are an essential aspect of sociolinguistic studies because they represent how language reflects respect, hierarchy, and cultural values within a community. This study focuses specifically on identifying the types of honorific addresses employed in male communication within the English Literature Department of Universitas Pamulang. By limiting the scope to the categorization of address terms, the research aimed to contribute a detailed understanding of how men employ different honorifics in both formal and informal settings. A qualitative descriptive method was applied to explore these linguistic patterns. The participants consisted of 58 male respondents, including students, lecturers, and staff, who were selected purposively to represent a range of academic and social backgrounds. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations, and were then analyzed thematically to identify recurring address terms. The findings reveal that male speakers at Universitas Pamulang utilize a variety of honorifics, such as Bang, Bro, Mas, Pak, Om, Kak, and Kang. These forms indicate a strong tendency to differentiate address terms based on social closeness, hierarchy, and cultural habit.

Abstract

This study aims to find out students’ responses through the use of Edpuzzleas an application in achieving listening comprehension. As a foreign language in Indonesia, sometimes students will face some obstacles and difficulties in learning the English language; the obstacles that must be faced by the first-year students, where else there are some skills to learn at the same time which will worsen their learning process as it will be hard to be understood with low competence in the first place. The use of Edpuzzle here is expected to help to get through the initial problem related to the achievement of listening comprehension. Edpuzzle is a platform that helps teachers invite students to have fun learning using videos. These videos can be edited and adjusted to the goal of the teachers in the class activity on a particular subject; they can be cut, recorded new voice, and add some more questions if it is needed. In this study, the participants are first-year students in English Literature of the University of Pamulang (UNPAM) with 54 students in the subject of listening. The data were collected by using a questionnaire and the discussion in the e-learning forum of UNPAM in listening subjects. The results of the study revealed that the students were interested in learning the English language of the subject listening using Edpuzzle as it lifts their consciousness so that they can overwhelmingly enjoy the process of learning. They also found out that the subject listening is becoming entertaining to learn and can be a fun learning too even with the task that is difficult for them, alongside their thought that learning English using Edpuzzle can help them improve their listening comprehension in a fun way possible.
