Abstract

A flipped classroom is a pedagogical approach that reverses the traditional model of learning where students are provided with materials prior to class. Whereas reflective practice is an approach that encourages students to analyze their learning experiences and evaluate their progress in understanding course materials. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the traditional model of classroom instruction, leading to a shift in teaching and learning activities toward virtual/remote delivery methods. This study evaluates the flipped classroom approach and reflective practices in Engineering Drawing module. The participants consisted of first year engineering students (n=76). The result fo the study shows positive outcomes from using flipped learning and reflective practice. Students felt that the module provided them with an engaging and challenging learning experience, enhancing not only their technical skills but also their overall learning capabilities

Abstract

Waste management methods in Indonesia largely rely on unsustainable practices such as open dumping and landfills which urgently need transformation. Pyrolysis is one alternative solution for waste problems as it can process waste into other products. As the existing production system was not set up to manufacture this machine, we proposed a production system to produce a pyrolizer so that a more effective and efficient production process can be achieved. In this study, we employed Group Technology approach using Rank Order Clustering (ROC) method to create cell manufacturing groups. Based on our evaluation on the shortest material movement, we produced 2 different cells to manufacture the pyrolyzer. Cell, I contained plate cutting, drilling, pipe cutting, and bending machines (M2, M5, M3, M4), whilst Cell 2 contained rolling and lathe machines (M1, M6).  It also contained main reactor, pyrolyzer reactor burner, middle condenser, upper access door, bottom access door, upper condenser, bottom condenser components (A, F, H, B, C, G, I). Out of the sixteen components to be made, seven components were in Cell I whereas the other nine were in Cell II (N, P, J, E, D, K , L, M, O) comprising burner case, access ladders, separators, firewalls, reactor base frames, condenser frames, gas piping, water piping, and sprinklers components. By applying this group technology method to the pyrolyzer production system, the production process could be carried out in a more efficient and organized manner.

Abstract

The overuse of plastic straws has led to a considerable volume of plastic waste, posing a serious threat to the environment. This accumulation of plastic waste not only causes significant environmental pollution but also raises health concerns for both humans and animals. As an eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws, researchers have turned to environmentally friendly straws. To explore the factors influencing Generation Z's (Gen Z) adoption of these eco-friendly straws, this study utilizes the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) while also incorporating environmental awareness and knowledge as additional determinants. Both quantitative using Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) and qualitative using thematic analysis methods are employed for comprehensive analysis. The results indicate that attitudes towards behaviour, perceived behavioural control, environmental awareness, and environmental knowledge all play pivotal roles in influencing the intensity of Gen Z's usage of environmentally friendly straws.

Abstract

The furniture industry in Jepara Regency, Central Java, is renowned for exporting high-quality products. One such product is the wood cap, which is used to cover the top of fences. The current manual production of wood caps results in a slow process. This research proposes an automation system to enhance efficiency, transforming the production process into two stages using an inclined plane, pushers, and a conveyor. This system integrates a block diagram, logic gates, a ladder diagram, and control devices, including limit switches, pressure switches, and an emergency button. The implementation of this automation allows orders to be completed in 50 days, significantly faster than the 150 days required by the manual system.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to develop a coffee bean type detection model using convolutional neural networks (CNN), leveraging a dataset of 14,525 images from 116 types of Indonesian coffee beans. Pre-processing steps including resizing, rescaling, and augmentation were applied to improve the dataset quality. The dataset was split into training, validation, and testing sets with proportions of 80%, 10%, and 10%, respectively. Two model development approaches were used: transfer learning with Inception V3 in two scenarios and a model built from scratch. The transfer learning Inception V3 model in scenario 1 achieved the best performance, with a test accuracy of 0.87 and optimal evaluation metrics across precision, recall, and F1-score. This model was fine-tuned using pretrained weights, allowing it to adapt effectively to the coffee bean dataset. The results highlight that transfer learning, especially with Inception V3, provides a robust method for classifying coffee beans, offering potential applications in the coffee industry for improving classification efficiency and accuracy. The study demonstrates how deep learning can enhance the objectivity and precision of coffee bean classification, contributing to greater consistency in product sorting and quality assessment.
