Abstract

The implementation of flipped classroom has become popular in higher education. However, few studies have conducted on how to expand various instructional strategies into a flipped classroom practice, which is important to learning. Meanwhile, prior studies have examined the effect of case-based learning (CBL) on improving student problem solving ability. The present study thus proposed a flipped classroom combined with CBL, an extension of the classic flipped classroom model. The present study also examined the effect of flipped classroom combined with CBL on students’ problem-solving ability. To compare the effect of CBL on student problem solving in a flipped classroom, we conducted a quasi-experimental design study with three classes involving 94 students in a private university in Indonesia. Across 7 weeks, where one experimental group received Flipped classroom combined with CBL and a second experimental group received the flipped classroom model, while the control group received regular classroom activities. The results indicated that learning through the flipped classroom combined with CBL resulted in better problem-solving ability compared to the flipped classroom model and conventional method. The findings imply that a flipped classroom combined with CBL is effective in cultivating students’ problem-solving ability and need to be replicated that involve larger groups of participants

Abstract

The growing complexity of real-world problems has heightened the need for critical thinking skills in education, particularly in fields like statistical education. This study examines the integration of the Flipped Classroom (FC) model with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to foster critical thinking among university students. Conducted at Bhineka University, the research involved 60 students divided into experimental (FC+PBL) and control (PBL-only) groups. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining pre-tests, post-tests, classroom observations, and reflective journals to collect quantitative and qualitative data. The experimental group participated in pre-class activities such as video lectures and quizzes, with in-class sessions focusing on collaborative problem-solving guided by PBL principles. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed a significant improvement in critical thinking skills in the FC+PBL group compared to the PBL-only group (p < 0.001). Qualitative findings highlighted increased engagement, collaboration, and deeper inquiry among the experimental group. These results underscore the potential of integrating FC and PBL to create dynamic, student-centered learning environments that enhance critical thinking and prepare students to tackle complex challenges effectively

Abstract

The dynamics of development and integration of information technology in education require the application of innovative learning strategies, methods and models, one of which is the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. This model is effective in developing students' 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. However, the facts in the field show that most teachers in SMK Malang Regency do not understand the concept or implementation of PjBL. This study aims to improve teachers' understanding and skills in implementing PjBL through training designed based on the ADDIE model, namely: (1) training needs analysis, (2) design, (3) development, (4) implementation, and (5) evaluation. This training was attended by 14 SMK teachers in Malang Regency with teaching backgrounds in Animation, Visual Communication Design, Network Computer Engineering, and Broadcasting subjects with blended training methods (face-to-face and online) on 22 May 2024, 24 May 2024, 30 May 2024, and 6 June 2024. The evaluation results showed significant improvement in teachers' understanding and skills in designing PjBL-based learning tools, with a final average score of 87.8. The training made a positive contribution in supporting teachers to adapt and develop project-based learning in vocational schools, in line with the demands of international education quality standards implemented at SMKN 1 Singosari Malang. The output of this activity produced training materials in the form of powerpoint, video documentation and online mass media publications.
