Abstract

This paper presents an analytical approach to determine the performance characteristics of an outer rotor Brushless DC (BLDC) motor using finite element analysis (FEA). An accurate performance characteristic is a crucial deliverable during the early motor design process in order to minimize the cost of change while delivering a feasible design to the application. There are several popular methods to determine motor performance, including template-based software as well as FEA. However, these two methods have limitations in terms of geometry and time. Therefore, this paper proposes that the limitations can be addressed by using a combination of FEA and mathematical equations. First, the optimum motor design is determined using an FEA analytical approach. Second, the torque constant KT, is derived from the FEA results and followed by performance curve generation using the mathematical equation of speed, current, and output power in terms of torque function. Finally, the outcome results are verified against the motor requirements, including an assessment of maximum speed, stall current, and maximum output power. In conclusion, this research introduces a methodology for determining full curve motor performance prior to prototype fabrication. The leverage benefit could be gained through robust design and low-cost development.

Abstract

This paper discussed a few type linear motors for lift systems applications. First, a few types of lift systems are generally presented. Based on these types of lift systems, the common actuators used to operate the lifts are compared and analyzed. Basically, in traditional lift systems, rotational motors are commonly employed as actuators. However, to achieve simpler lift systems, linear motors are utilized instead of rotational motors in direct drive systems. There are three types of linear motors usually being adopted which are linear induction motors (LIM), permanent magnets linear synchronous motors (PMLSM) and switched-reluctance linear synchronous motors (SRLSM). LIM exhibits a simple structure but relatively have low performance, while the SRLSM demonstrates a similar simplicity yet delivering improved performance compared to the LIM. On the other hand, the PMLSM, despite its high-performance capabilities, suffers from notable cogging.

Abstract

This study reviews the advancements in double-stator permanent magnet machines (DSPMM) with a focus on modeling techniques, design variations, and performance optimization. The research categorizes existing DSPMM modeling methods, including numerical approaches like finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM), as well as analytical approaches such as analytical subdomain method (ASM), magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), and Maxwell's equation approach (MEA). These methods improve analytical accuracy, computational efficiency, and address challenges like magnetic saturation and electromagnetic interactions. Structural innovations, including segmented rotor-stator techniques, Halbach arrangements, and soft composite materials, enhance torque density, reduce cogging torque, and optimize magnetic flux distribution, contributing to higher energy efficiency and reduced noise. Supported by software tools like Ansys Maxwell and JMAG-designer, this study identifies optimal DSPMM configurations for various applications, including electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. The findings emphasize the potential of DSPMM for efficient, high-performance electric machines while highlighting the need for further research on transient effects and advanced cooling systems to improve thermal stability.

Abstract

This paper introduces a portable and user-friendly innovation in food processing by replacing traditional molding methods with a linear DC motor (LDM). Traditional methods, which involve manual pressing, are energy-intensive and time-consuming, reducing productivity. The proposed LDM offers a simple, cost-effective, and robust solution capable of producing constant thrust, unlike conventional LDMs that require complex and expensive control methods and are limited to short displacements. The research focuses on modelling and analyzing an LDM with constant thrust characteristics for food processing applications. The primary objective is to model the thrust using the permeance analysis method (PAM), ensuring constant thrust capability. Verification was conducted using the finite element method (FEM) and measurement results, showing a percentage difference of 1.7% and 6.5%, respectively, between PAM and the other methods. The study provides valuable guidance for designing LDMs with constant thrust capabilities, enhancing the efficiency and practicality of food processing devices.

Abstract

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are widely used in applications where high efficiency is crucial. With advancements in permanent magnet technology, BLDC motors are increasingly suitable for high-torque applications such as residential elevators. Known for their high efficiency, low maintenance, and excellent controllability, BLDC motors are ideal candidates for this research. However, the challenge lies in identifying the most efficient rotor structure that can deliver the required torque for residential elevator applications while maintaining cost-effectiveness and compact design. This paper addresses this problem by simulating various rotor types of BLDC motors using the finite element method (FEM), Ansys Maxwell. four different rotor structures have been analyzed to evaluate their back electromotive force (EMF) and torque. The model generating the highest torque will be selected for manufacturing as a motor for residential elevators. Among the models studied, BLDC-ERA rotor structures produced the highest torque of 28 Nm, while BLDC-HR type generates the lowest torque. To ensure practicality and cost-effectiveness of installing elevators in double-story houses or smaller residences, the selected motor must be compact and affordable, enabling senior citizen to maintain their independence. This research not only aids other researchers in designing suitable motors for elevator applications but also contributes to societal well-being by promoting accessibility and independence for the elderly.
