Abstract

The complexity of meaning in advertising involves not only language elements that play a role in conveying meaning but also non-verbal language elements and other visual means. For that reason, a multimodal approach is needed to understand the complexity of meaning. The present article discussed a multimodal analysis of Scarlett's advertising images in collaboration with Song Joong Ki. The study used the analysis by Kress & Van Leeuwen's multimodal concept, which includes three dimensions of meta-functional analysis: representational, interpersonal, and compositional meta-functions. The current research design was qualitative descriptive, where the data were collected through documentation. The data source was a poster on the Instagram feed @scarlett_whitening depicting Song Joong Ki as a brand ambassador. The results showed that Scarlett advertisers aim to attract active consumers on social media through the portrayal of Song Joong Ki in the advertisement. Apart from that, the advertisement also represents a fantasy about a brightening and moisturizing body serum. Keywords: multimodality, social semiotics, advertising, Scarlett, Song Joong Ki

Abstract

News about Mario Dandy's abuse of David Ozora became the main focus in various media. The focus of the research is to analyze how online news portals present women and implement strategies for women's appearance in the news. This research applies a qualitative design by utilizing Sara Mills' concept of feminist discourse. The research subject is the online news portal Tribunnews.com, especially in reporting on the Agnes Gracia case with Mario Dandy in the period 24 February 2023. The research results show that the Tribunnews.com news portal in its efforts to report on the Agnes Gracia case positions women as objects and there is a tendency in places the author through a male perspective. Tribunnews.com carries out a strategy for the emergence of women in the vortex of violence cases through three methods, namely character, focalization and schemata.Keywords: online news; violence; news; WomanABSTRAKBerita mengenai tindakan penganiayaan oleh Mario Dandy kepada David Ozora menjadi sorotan utama di berbagai media. Fokus penelitian adalah menganalisis bagaimana portal berita daring menampilkan perempuan dan melakukan strategi kemunculan perempuan dalam pemberitaan. Penelitian ini mengaplikasikan desain kualitatif dengan memanfaatkan konsep wacana feminisme Sara Mills. Subjek penelitian berupa portal berita daring Tribunnews.com khususnya dalam pemberitaan kasus Agnes Gracia dengan Mario Dandy pada kurun waktu 24 Februari 2023. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa portal berita Tribunnews.com dalam upaya memberitakan kasus Agnes Gracia memposisikan pihak perempuan sebagai objek dan adanya suatu kecenderungan dalam menempatkan pihak penulis melalui sudut pandang laki-laki. Tribunnews.com melakukan strategi kemunculan perempuan pada pusaran kasus kekerasan melalui tiga cara yaitu karakter, focalization dan schemata. Kata Kunci:  berita daring; kekerasan; pemberitaan; perempuan

Abstract

The children’s story The Secret Seven-Sapta Siaga 6th edition is a detective genre children’s story written by Enid Blyton. This research on children’s stories was conducted to reveal how the detective genre formula is found in the children’s book The Secret Seven-Sapta Siaga. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a review of John G. Cawelti’s classic detective formula as a theory for finding formulas for children’s stories. The material object used is the children’s story The Secret Seven Sapta Siaga. The techniques in data collection are literature study, reading, observation, and taking notes. The results of the study reveal that the children’s storybook The Secret Seven-Sapta Siaga by Enid Blyton is written with classic detective typology which in the story presents a hero with a final goal to be achieved. This detective children’s story has six main phases in the formulaic structure of the story namely, (1) the introduction of the detective. (2) crimes and leads. (3) inquiry. (4) Announcement of solutions. (5) explanation of solutions. And, (6)The end of the story. The form of the invention contained in the story pattern is the development of the detective genre in the form of a crime for attempted theft of goods.
