Abstract

This article seeks to examine the rise of tarekat (Sufi order) in the context of the digital public sphere with a special attention to the Eshaykh website. As this article argues, the Eshaykh website represents an adaptation of conventional groups of tarekat combined with information technology. However, this digital adoption raises a new problem, especially related to the differences in terms of access between digital tarekat and conventional tarekat. This article—using a virtual ethnographic approach—focuses on the Eshaykh website by the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Haqqaniyah (TNH) as the primary source. The website provides all information about the tarekat, both the doctrine and the wirid, which are presented online. There is also an element of the simplification of orthodoxy which has so far been strictly guarded by conventional tarekat, but the rise of the Eshaykh website in the digital public sphere is offering tarekat practices that are easily accessible and reach all levels of society.

Abstract

This article initially explores the Minang-origin tarekat in Medan City. These Minang-origin tarekats are scattered in various regions and have an activity base in Medan City. The distinguishing element of a Minang tarekat from other communities is related to the ethnic identity within it, both in the doctrines and rituals taught to the tarekat. To understand the tarekat from Minang, a related research question is asked about the genealogy and role of the community from Minang in Medan City. This research found several tarekats from Minang, namely the Tarekat Syattariyah (TS), which has a lineage connected to Shaykh Burhanuddin in Ulakan, Pariaman, the Tarekat Sammaniyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TSN) related to Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadim in Belubus, Payakumbuh, the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Kadirun Yahya (TNKY) is connected to Shaykh Hasyim in Bukit Tinggi and Shyakh ‘Abd al-Majid in Tanah Datar, and the Tarekat Naqsyabandiyah Yayasan Jabal Abi Qubis (TNYJAQ) from Shaykh Ibrahim’s path in Bonjol, Pasaman. Meanwhile, the role played by the tarekat from Minang relates to spiritual education, such as Sufism recitation, which is actively carried out in surau or at home, and mysticism activities which are practiced according to a specified time. Finally, this study confirms that Minang-origin tarekats in Medan City have an important role in the spiritual education of the people of Medan City.

Abstract

This article describes the involvement of Majelis Zikir Tathma’innulqulub (MZT) in the local leaders election. Although this particular case occurred in the Medan city, it’s also explain in general the majlis dhikr phenomenon in Indonesia’s political practice. This phenomenon is interesting since the involvement of majlis dhikr is uncommon in the political world—as commonly known, sufism possess different (spiritual) orientation. The involvement can be best described as a political brand of sufism: in ritual and practice in supporting one of the local candidate. Thus, it describes the ritual of “yasinan and dhikr” from the beginning of election until the end as a “political ritual”. In addition, MZT also serves as a political marketing—spiritual adviser as well as political consultant; while in the practical aspect, MZT involved in hidden and public campaign. However, the candidate supported by MZT was lost. This fact explains that political brand of sufism has no significant influence in politics practice.
