Abstract

This study looks at how control and resistance are portrayed in Cecelia Ahern's dystopian novel Flawed and how the main character reacts to it. The goal of this study is to examine the concepts of control and resistance as they are presented in the book Flawed. Michel Foucault's theory of power and knowledge was applied to this study. The descriptive qualitative approach was used to carry out this study. The researcher discovered sixteen data sets with resistance elements from Celestine as the main character and fourteen data sets with control aspects from the government. The research's conclusions demonstrate how the government exercises its authority and existence through various means of control, including prohibitions, surveillance, and retaliation against the Flawed (opponents). Contrary to this, Celestine's resistance as the major character demonstrates that she typically resists verbally rather than physically. Celestine chooses to rebel and resist this system of control, which inspires a resistance movement and gives hope to those who are suppressed. The resistance carried out by Celestine shows that the power and knowledge held by the government are not absolute.

Abstract

This study generally aims to describe the strategy of modern Batak and Christian sects (Charismatic churches) as the subordinate agents to achieve a recognition of their faith from Batak Toba communities who accepted Ulos and cultural practices as the symbolic capital and the cultural identity in the field of Christianity. The scope of this study focuses on the artistic field and religious identity of Batak Toba, which is depicted by reactions of Batak people who still recognize Ulos as part of the religious instrument at conventional churches, as shown in the mailing list comments, Silaban Brotherhood. This study will use ethnographic qualitative approaches and research literature. To answer this issue, Bourdieu’s perspective theory will take control of drawing identity as the mental representation of objectives toward practices committed by social agents and as the subjectivity shown by symbolic manipulation strategies. The construction of identity is produced by the existence of the power field and the occurrence of symbolic capital amongst social agents.

Abstract

Blasphemy cases toward minority have been significantly rising in Indonesia. Religion has already become one of the aspects that urge sustainable conflicts among other pluralistic societies. Each side, the actors and the victims, have struggled to defend their truth without putting their conscience aside humanity or tolerance. This cost is too much comparing to what our nation did to fight for democracy. One of recent blasphemy issues that successfully went viral is a video showing a popular Islamic cleric, Abdul Somad telling a crowd that the Christian crucifix is the dwelling place for a genie. Surely, this video has sparked an angry reaction from Christians. However, this action met some contrary responses from our society. This study aims to analyze how religious sentiments could show its power or authority to affect social control that happened in Indonesia. This study applied Bourdieu’s theory of social capital and power reflecting the strategies of resistance which may happen between pros and cons by combining some perspectives.

Abstract

Abstract—The coronavirus has fully motivated a number of regions in Indonesia to implement Large-Scale General Restrictions (PSBB). This policy may be the right solution. However, it also brings with it a recent dilemma embracing women. PSBB has influenced individuals to limit their physical mobility and move them to use high dependence on technology platforms including the web or social media. The intensity and repetition of social media use leads to online aggression compared to the case of women. The Jakarta Women's Legal Aid Institute noted that there were 30 cases of online violence against women in Indonesia in March and April 2020. Unfortunately, this number continues to increase from year to year. Many forms of online sex-based violence exist and most of them aim to intimidate, humiliate, and dominate women. Some of them are online sexual harassment, fear of sharing personal content with exploitation themes, dating violence, and online extortion. Surprisingly, not all women in Indonesia understand and report these forms of violence to the National Commission for the Protection of Women or related agencies due to the lack of information and socialization from local governments during the pandemic. As a result, this issue marks a long list of solutions involving governments and the private sector to make online violence worse. This paper will explicitly show the importance of eradicating online violence against women during the Coronavirus in Indonesia. Courage to speak is needed. Community support to exercise their right to vote is very important to voice positive things and stop violence against women. Keywords: covid-19,gender, Indonesia, online violence, woman Abstrak—Virus corona telah mendorong sejumlah daerah di Indonesia untuk menerapkan Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar (PSBB).
