Abstract

Abstract

Shallot is an agricultural commodity that has many benefits. It can grow in various habitat types, such as low and high land, paddy fields, home gardens, or even dry land. Biochar is the conversion of agricultural waste through incomplete combustion or pyrolysis into carbon-rich solid material. Utilizing biochar to the soil increases soil fertility because it provides soil nutrients, especially nitrogen, as well as maintaining soil chemicals. This research aim is to identify the effects of biochar application and manure on growth and production of shallot in the reserach field of the Agricultural Development Polytechnic of Medan (Polbangtan Medan). This research was conducted by using a randomized block design and analyzing with ANOVA (5%) and the smallest real difference (5%) as well as using two research parameters which were soil and plant parameters. The initial soil parameters before biochar application were pH, C-organic, N, P and K- total soil, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), while plant parameters were height (cm), number of leaves, number of tubers, wet tuber weight per beds (g), wet tuber weights per bed (g). The result revealed that the chemical content of Inceptisol (i.e., pH, CEC, N, P, K, and C-organic) was low and very low. The effect of the biochar and manure was significantly different on the number of leaves and wet tuber weight of shallot. Based on the smallest real difference test showed control was significantly different with biochar of durian peel + manure and biochar of durian peels + biochar of maize on the number of leaves. Furthermore, except biochar of husk + manure on the tuber dry weight, all treatments were significantly different from control on wet tuber weight of shallot. So that, the utilization of biochar can improve soil fertility and shallot production.

Abstract

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the most widely cultivated commodities in the world after rice. This study aims to (1) evaluate the most effective database available at Harzing's Publish or Perish software with a year-range search method and the use of additional keywords to obtain the highest number of manuscripts from journal sources relevant to maize hybrids in the field of plant science and agriculture and (2) assess the publication of articles and types of reviews on hybrid maize research related to plant science and agricultural by mapping and visualizing of bibliometric analysis. The data of bibliometric analysis was collected from PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and CrossRef in Harzing's Publish or Perish software. The keyword used in this research was "hybrid maize" with the year of publication of the article 1962-2021. CrossRef  has the highest number of total relevant manuscripts compared to the others. The search method for years is the most effective and efficient if the number of manuscripts is less than 1000. The topic of hybrid maize was mainly published in 2020. The journal that published the most on maize hybrid was Crop Science, especially from 1982- 2011. VOSviewer keyword analysis found that there were 5 clusters from 122 items, 1851 links, and total link strength of 5516. The topic of hybrid maize has been massively published since 2010. Apart from that, hybrid maize and gene were also the two most discussed topics.

Abstract

Abstract. Afrianto WF, Wati SI, Hidayatullah T. 2021. The suitability assessment of the tree species in the urban parks and urban forest in Kediri City, East Java, Indonesia. Nusantara Bioscience 13: 131-139. Kediri has several urban parks and an urban forest as green open space (GOS), which have essential roles in economical, social, aesthetical, and ecological aspects. Generally, urban trees provide ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, stormwater attenuation, energy conservation, habitat for wildlife, and air, water, and noise pollutants reduction. The present study aimed to (i) determine tree diversity in five urban parks and an urban forest in Kediri City and (ii) evaluate the suitability of tree species based on three indicators (silviculture, management, and aesthetic). This study was conducted in five urban parks and one urban forest in Kediri City. The suitability assessment was carried out through a literature review. The results showed that 29 tree species belonging to 17 families were found in the study sites, with the family Fabaceae being the most dominant one with five species. The number of exotic tree species (17) was higher than that of the native ones (12). The suitability assessment results showed that 21 tree species had a high score of 39-44, and only eight urban tree species had a medium score of 36-38. The urban parks and forests in Kediri were managed to conserve germplasm, recreation, and protection. Therefore, the shapes had to be clumped and lined. This study will contribute information to be used as guidance for urban tree management and policy framework.

Abstract

The expansion of upland rice cultivation into suboptimal lands, particularly Ultisols, represents a strategic approach to increasing national rice production. However, low soil fertility, acidic pH, and limited nutrient availability constrain productivity in such environments. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and compost application in improving the growth and yield of upland rice (Inpago 12) cultivated on Ultisol soils in Deli Serdang and Langkat, North Sumatra. A factorial randomized block design with three factors, AMF dosage (0–600 spores), compost rate (0–5 t ha⁻¹), and location that was implemented with three replications (150 experimental units). Soil analysis confirmed acidic conditions with low nutrient status typical of Ultisols. Five AMF taxa were identified with root colonization ranging from moderate to very high (46.67–100%). ANOVA results revealed that location significantly affected most growth and yield parameters, whereas AMF and compost treatments showed limited statistical effects. The most effective treatment combination was 450 spores with 2 t ha⁻¹ compost in Deli Serdang, which improved tiller number, biomass, and panicle production. These findings indicate that the effectiveness of AMF and compost application in Ultisols is highly site-specific and influenced by local soil characteristics.
