Abstract

Inattentive behavior could become unnoticed but it is often a major constraint to effective classroom instruction and students’ performance. This research investigated teachers’ assessment of inattentive classroom behavior among primary school students in Ilorin city, Kwara State, Nigeria. The research is a survey research with the population consisted of 1,568 teachers, while 160 participants were purposively selected. A questionnaire type of instrument was used in the research. The results showed a reliability coefficient of r = 0.81 after conducting the test-retest reliability. The research question was analyzed with descriptive statistics while the hypotheses were tested with t-test and ANOVA at the 0.05 level of significance. Inattentive classroom behavior was high among primary school students as assessed by teachers. Teachers’ assessment of students’ inattentive behavior was similarly based on gender and qualification but different based on work experience. It was recommended that early childhood education/primary school teachers and counselors as well as other stakeholders in primary education should synergize to mitigate the high level of inattentive classroom behavior among students in order to enhance teaching-learning.

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour among tertiary institution students in Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 561 students were selected by using stratified sampling technique. Data was collected with an instrument titled: Social Media and High-Risk Sexual Behaviour Questionnaire (SMHRSBQ). The measure of central tendency (mean) and mean average were used to determine levels of social media use and involvement in high-risk sexual behaviour. The Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and One-Way ANOVA Statistics were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The Mean Average of responses on social media use was 3.19 while that of high-risk sexual behaviour was 2.83 indicating high levels on both variables among tertiary institution students respectively. Relationship between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour was significant (p=0.00); no significant difference in social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour based on institution type (University=0.61; Polytechnic=0.13; College of Education=0.06: University=0.11; Polytechnic=0.16; College of Education=0.21) respectively. It was concluded that high use of social media predisposes students to high-risk sexual behaviour. School guidance counsellors should organise seminars periodically to sensitise students on the association between social media use and high-risk sexual behaviour.

Abstract

Examination anxiety has made students fail their examinations, causing many problems, including depression and suicide. The study aimed to investigate study habit strategies for overcoming examination anxiety as perceived by undergraduate students in Kwara State, Nigeria. The influence of gender, academic level, and age on strategies for handling examination anxiety were also investigated. A descriptive survey was adopted, with a sample of 250 respondents selected through a multistage sampling procedure to participate. Data was collected through Study Habit for overcoming Examination Anxiety Questionnaire (SHEAQ). The instrument was validated by four experts in measurement and has a good reliability coefficient obtained through test re-test. One research question and three hypotheses guided the study. Based on data analysis with t-test and ANOVA, hypothesis 1 was retained, while hypotheses 2 and 3 were rejected. Findings showed that overcoming examination anxiety as perceived by respondents are: reviewing what was taught, having adequate time for study, and testing oneself, among other strategies. Findings also showed no significant difference in the strategies for overcoming examination anxiety based on gender; significant differences were found based on academic level and age. Therefore, students should be counseled on the need to develop good study habits to pass examinations.

Abstract

Aggressive behavior is a range of acts that result in physical and psychological harm to the perpetrator, and other students, thus hindering learning activities. This study investigated the relationship between exposure to violent videos and aggressive behavior among public secondary students in Kwara State, Nigeria. The survey method with a correlational design was adopted. A total sample of 381 participants was involved using the stratified random sampling technique. A research-designed questionnaire titled Exposure to Violent Videos and Aggressive Behaviour Questionnaire (EVABQ) was used to collect the data. Pearson’s product-moment correlation and t-test statistics were used to analyze the hypotheses. Results revealed a positive relationship between exposure to violent videos and aggressive behavior. The results showed statistically significant differences in exposure to violent videos and aggressive behavior among public secondary students based on gender and age. Male respondents were more exposed to violent videos and had more aggressive behavior than females. In contrast, students below 15 years old were more exposed to violent videos and exhibited aggressive behavior than 15 years and above. Therefore, school counselors should sensitize public secondary students to the influence of exposure to violent videos on aggressive behavior, especially among males and students below 15 years old.
