Abstract

Aims: Increasing a person's age results in a significant decline in body development, which is one of the causes of stress conditions in the elderly. In addition to a decrease in physical condition, the elderly who experience a decrease in social activities, one of which is the state of retirement. The elderly who used to work experienced drastic changes in their activities. There needs to be special treatment that can divert the stress experienced by the elderly rather not get worse. This study aims to identify the effect of low-impact aerobic exercise on reducing stress levels in the elderly. Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental research (One Group Pre-Post-test design), sampling using purposive sampling of 30 respondents. The population in this study is the elderly in the Antapani District. The measurement tool used is the PSS-10 (Perceived Stress Scale) questionnaire. Results: The research results show that the majority of respondents in this study were female, with an average age of 60 years. Then on the Wilcoxon test there is a difference in the average value of the pre-test and post-test and the difference is quite large. Conclusion: There is an effect of low-impact aerobic exercise on reducing stress levels in the elderly. Suggestion: It is hoped that this exercise will be carried out regularly once a week. This is because in addition to body fitness, and to eliminate boredom, it can also reduce stress in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Cognitive decline and physical deterioration are common issues among the elderly, significantly impacting their quality of life. The unanticipated cognitive impairments will result in dementia. Effective approaches to simultaneously improving both aspects remain to be further developed and evaluated. Exercise with a matching memory game overcomes the issues. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an exergame, combining memory-stimulating games and physical exercise in improving cognitive function and physical fitness among the elderly. Methods: The study was a quick experiment with two groups in a pre-post test design. A number of 119 participants were recruited using purposive sampling and randomly divided into the experimental group (n=60) or the control group (n=59). Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), while physical fitness was measured with the 2-minute step test score. Results: The data was analyzed using a paired t-test, which revealed a significant improvement in MMSE and 2-minute scores in the experimental group before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). Additionally, the independent t-test analysis demonstrated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in both cognitive and physical fitness measures after the intervention (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Implementing exercise has a significant positive influence on cognitive function and physical fitness among the elderly. Incorporating an exergame into community health programs for the elderly could provide substantial benefits to their overall well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

Background : Stress is a common psychological issue among older adults, particularly those residing in nursing homes. This condition can negatively affect both physical and mental health. Physical activity-based interventions, such as Square Stepping Exercise (SSE), have been explored as a potential strategy to alleviate stress in the elderly. This study aims to analyze the effect of Square Stepping Exercise on stress levels among older adults living in nursing homes. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of Square Stepping Exercise (SSE) on stress levels in elderly people living in nursing homes.  Method: The method used in this research is an experiment with a pre-test and post-test design. A total of 33 elderly people in nursing homes took part in the SSE program. The stress scale was measured before and after the intervention using a measuring tool, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Result: The results of the analysis show that there is a significant decrease in the stress scale after SSE training, with a p value <0.05  and Δ = 10,7. This may indicate that SSE training is effective in reducing stress levels in the elderly. This reduction in stress is associated with increased physical activity, improved balance, and social interaction during exercise. Conclusion: Square Stepping Exercise can be used as an alternative intervention to reduce stress in elderly people in nursing homes, which has a positive impact on their quality of life.
