Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of cohesive devices and the chain interaction of cohesive devices to achieve coherence in argumentative essays of Universitas Negeri Semarang graduate students. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design. It focused on cohesion and coherence analysis of students’ writing. The findings of the study showed that all of the types of cohesive devices such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, and reiteration were found in the students’ essays. These cohesive devices provide the coherence of the text through their semantic relation or bound which create the two cohesive chains; identity chains and similarity chains. The interaction between both chains can give explicit signals to guide readers towards the intended interpretation of the text. The result of this chain interaction is known as cohesive harmony. Most of students’ essays achieve coherence because the total tokens of the students’ essays enter more than 50% of chain interaction. Unfortunately, the students overuse certain types of cohesive devices such as repetition in creating the chains.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of TikTok’s short-form content on the development of English language skills among students at Institut Elkatarie. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, the research compares two groups of students: an experimental group using TikTok as a supplementary learning tool and a control group following traditional classroom methods. The findings reveal that the experimental group showed significant improvement in listening comprehension, pronunciation, and vocabulary acquisition, with a 22.9% increase in their post-test scores compared to only an 8.2% improvement in the control group. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, a TikTok usage questionnaire, and in-depth interviews. The study confirms that TikTok’s engaging, authentic content motivated students, aligning with constructivist learning theory and intrinsic motivation theory, which emphasize contextual and enjoyable learning experiences. The results suggest that TikTok can be a valuable tool in enhancing language learning, particularly in areas where traditional methods may fall short, such as informal language use and listening skills. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on digital platforms in education, offering insights into how social media can be effectively integrated into language learning practices.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in the 3T (isadvantaged, forefront, outer) regions of North Lombok. The method employed is qualitative with a multi-site approach to examine the challenges of implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in this area. The study finds that the implementation faces challenges such as inadequate educational infrastructure, limited teacher quality, and high levels of poverty, which hinder effective education. To address these issues, strategic collaboration among local government, educational institutions, and the community is crucial. This includes improving infrastructure, providing continuous teacher training, integrating local content into the curriculum, and enhancing socio-economic support and transportation. Active parental involvement also plays a significant role. Through these combined efforts, inclusive and relevant education can be achieved for students in these regions.
