Abstract

A motion picture is one of the most popular spectacles people enjoy for various reasons, among others for entertainment. A film titled “Mission: Impossible” is one of the all-time most watched movies globally, since the first series was created in 1996. In the year 2023 it has come to the 7th series, and what has been released was only the first part, leaving its fans anxiously waiting for the end of the story. Many people would say there is nothing new in each of the series; the script writer applies the same ‘formula” to attract audience, however the series never fail to generate a lot of revenue, with the last rendition already be very popular and recorded as one of the box-office only within the first two days of its showing. In the era where spectacles are the pinnacle of day-to-day life for almost everyone, this research is going to investigate audience reception of the film “Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning Part One” in terms of the components of a spectacle, applying the concept of The Society of Spectacle by Debord (1967) which stated that a spectacle is built by utilizing “The Star, the Agent of Spectacle, False Choice / Pseudo needs and Détournement. The research focuses on the détournement by analyzing audience comments posted on a social media platform, investigating the reasons they love and hate the film, and the result will reveal how (un)successful the detournements are applied. Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of written corrective feedback (WCF) in higher education, specifically within a Composition II course. It aims to identify the most commonly used types of WCF, their acceptance by students, and their impact on writing improvement. Using content analysis, 88 instances of WCF from the first and second essay drafts of 18 students were categorized into four types according to Hattie and Timperley framework: feeding up at the task level, feeding back at the task level, feeding back at the process level, and feeding forward at the process level. Feeding forward at the process level was most prevalent (51%), followed by feeding up and feeding back at the process level (20.5% each), and feeding back at the task level (8%). Feeding up at the task level had the highest acceptance rate (89%). Conversely, feeding back at the task level and feeding back at the process level had moderate reception (57% and 56%), while feeding forward at the process level had a substantial acceptance rate (67%). The findings emphasize that clear, varied, and goal-oriented feedback enhances students’ engagement, self-regulation, and writing proficiency by addressing specific areas for improvement and guiding future development, ultimately fostering sustained academic growth.

Abstract

Errors, defined as mistaken application of linguistic theory done by language learners, are generally seen as negative element in language learning. However, several researchers believed that error analysis can be used to understand how students process a target language. Understanding this will give insights on which areas of language the students find it difficult. Therefore, this study was conducted for this purpose. Descriptive qualitative methodology was employed to examine types of writing errors that are related to inflectional affixation performed by 8 freshman students. The errors that were identified in the students’ written language were described in linguistic and surface category. Authoritative interpretation was conducted to investigate the cause of error occurrence through interview. The study finds that the students still face difficulty in subject-verb agreement, plurals, and past participle. Furthermore, it was also found that the dominant cause of the error occurrence is interlingual factors, negative transfer from their first language.

Abstract

Social media has been influential and important in people’s life as a place for socializing, finding entertainment and - nowadays- information. People share various images and videos – or spectacles- through the platforms, with Tik Tok and Instagram as two of the most popular platforms. This research highlights and analyzed war spectacles created by the President of Ukraine and a Ukrainian university student on those platforms that were aimed at raising people’s awareness and empathy to the sufferings of the country and hopefully support their fight against Russia’s invasion, using semiotics concept, and proves that spectacles do have power to move people and generate reaction that can eventually cause expected changes, or spectocurrency.
