Abstract

Writing is a fundamental skill in English language learning. However, it poses challenges for vocational students, especially when composing job application letters. Mastery in organizing content, utilizing appropriate formal language, and applying accurate grammar is essential for effective professional communication. This study aims to analyze students' ability to write job application letters using Canva Worksheets as an instructional tool. A descriptive qualitative research design was applied, focusing on eleventh-grade culinary program students at SMKN 6 Yogyakarta. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and student worksheets. A rubric-based scoring system was used to evaluate students' writing performance, considering content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s framework, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings revealed that although some students demonstrated strength in content and organization, a significant number struggled with vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Only 30% achieved high scores in content, and merely 16% excelled in vocabulary. Teacher insights affirmed challenges in structuring ideas and applying formal expressions. Canva Worksheets provided structured, visually appealing resources that increased student motivation and improved writing organization. Future studies should investigate long-term impacts of digital tools on writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning needs of business students in the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) using a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants consisted of 15–20 students from business and professional communication programs who had completed at ESP course. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. To Analysis the data the resercher used thematic analysis. The findings revealed that needs of ESP students are highly contextual and professionally oriented, with a particular emphasis on speaking and writing skills relevant to business communication such as meetings, presentations, negotiations, and report writing. Major challenges identified include limited technical vocabulary, the use of general materials that lack business relevance, and teacher-centered instruction methods. Students expressed a preference for more authentic, interactive, and task-based learning activities that reflect real-world business practices. The study concludes that ESP learning should adopt communicative and participatory approaches aligned with industry demands to enhance professional competence. The results contribute theoretically to ESP needs analysis and curriculum design, and practically to the development of relevant and effective learning materials for business students.

Abstract

Developing writing skills in vocational high schools remains a significant challenge, particularly in composing advertisement texts that require persuasive language, creativity, and audience awareness. Although student-centered and technology-integrated approaches are increasingly promoted, empirical studies examining the integration of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with digital media in teaching advertisement texts are still limited. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the implementation of PBL supported by digital poster media to enhance students’ writing skills. This research employed a mixed-method approach using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The participants were 36 tenth-grade students (aged 15–16) from the Visual Communication Design program at SMKN 5 Yogyakarta. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, documentation, and writing assessments, and analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that the implementation of PBL encouraged more active and contextual learning, as students engaged in collaborative problem-solving tasks to develop advertisement texts in digital poster form. Quantitative results show improvement in students’ writing performance from pre-test to post-test, particularly in vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, and text organization. Qualitative data further suggest increased participation, collaboration, and confidence during the learning process. Overall, the study suggests that integrating PBL with digital poster media may support the development of writing skills in vocational English education contexts.
