Abstract

This research is based on students’ speaking ability who had followed the EnglishConversation Club (ECC) program especially for the third semester of English Department. Thepurpose of this study was to analyze the students’ speaking ability at the 3rd semester in the EnglishConversation Club FKIP UNILAK Pekanbaru. The type of the research was mixed method in typeof explanatory design. The number of participant was 53 students. The researcher used twoinstruments, those were test and interview. In analyzing the data, it used in descriptive statistics.The result of the analysis showed that the average score of 3rd semester students’ speaking abilitywas 45.42. It can be concluded that the students’ speaking ability was categorized into failed . Thescore of Standard Deviation was 7.02, Variance was 49.30, and Range was 36 points . It meansthat the students’ speaking ability was homogeneous. According to the Z-Score, it can be seen that49.06% students’ ability was higher than average and 50.94% students ability was below theaverage. In conclusion, the students’ ability in learning speaking English was failed, it had beenaffected by some factors, those were lack of vocabulary, grammar and motivation. It was supportedby the interview, eventhough the students’ perception to English Conversation Club (ECC)program was positive, but in fact, the students’ frequency to speak English was seldom, they wereless practice speaking English everyday.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mengucapkan kataberakhiran -ed pada kata kerja beraturan bentuk lampau (regular verb past tense). Hasil analisistersebut digunakan sebagai bahan evaluasi mata kuliah Pronunciation. Metode yang digunakandalam penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan rancangan penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif.Yang menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 1 yakni kelas 1A dan1B Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP-UNILAK Tahun Akademik 2016/2017 yangberjumlah sebanyak 54 orang. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah tesdan wawancara (interview). Data yang didapat dari tes diolah menggunakan rubrik penilaian dandata yang didapat dari wawancara dijelaskan secara deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil tes, ditemukanbahwa nilai rata-rata mahasiswa secara keseluruhan adalah 70.4 dan digolongkan kedalamkategori yang kurang baik (fair). Selanjutnya, nilai rata-rata untuk kelas 1A adalah 66.5 dan nilaikelas 1B adalah 69.2 (fair). Kemudian, berdasarkan hasil wawancara, ditemukan bahwakelemahan mahasiswa dalam pengucapan kata tersebut dipengaruhi oleh jarangnya meluangkanwaktu untuk berlatih dan juga dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan sistem bunyi antara bahasa Inggrisdan bahasa Indonesia. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuanmahasiswa dalam mengucapkan kata berakhiran-ed masih terbilang lemah. Sehingga, diperlukanperbaikan yang lebih intens lagi agar kemampuan mahasiswa dalam pengucapan kata berakhiran–ed dapat meningkat lebih baik lagi.

Abstract

This study was attempted to investigate the effects of two different types of selfassessment:on-task versus off-task on EFL Indonesian students’ writing performanceacross different proficiency level. The on-task self-assessment asked the students toself-evaluate their performance immediately after they completed their English writingtasks. The off-task self-assessment asked the students to evaluate their overallperformance in a general and somewhat in de-contextualized way. The total number offorty-eight (48) students participated in this study and randomly assigned into twoexperimental groups. The data was gained from the post-test (essay writing test). Theresults indicated that the low proficiency students in on-task self-assessment groupposed a significant effect and they could self-assess their writing performance moreaccurately than they had in an off-task format. In conclusion, on-task self-assessment issuggested to be implemented for lower achievers to consolidate their writingperformance. However, further research is suggested to conduct to know the students’experiences in applying on-task and off-task self-assessment as an effective writingstrategy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari dengan adanya kebutuhan untuk mengukur dan menganalisis sejauhmanakemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis esai argumentatif. Hasil pengukuran tersebut bertujuanuntuk menganalisis kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis esai argumentatif yang digunakansebagai bahan evaluasi mata kuliah Academic Writing. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitianini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan rancangan penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Yang menjadipartisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 5 prodi Pendidikan Bahasa InggrisFKIP-UNILAK Tahun Akademik 2017/2018 yang berjumlah sebanyak 52 orang. Instrumenpenelitian yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah tes dan wawancara. Berdasarkanhasil tes, diperoleh nilai rata-rata mahasiswa adalah 78.1 dan dikategorikan ke dalamkemampuan yang baik (good). Selanjutnya, dari hasil wawancara diperoleh informasi bahwamahasiswa mampu menulis esai dengan baik karena mahasiswa tersebut cukup mampu danmemahami cara menulis esai tersebut. Sehingga, hal ini dapat memudahkan mahasiswa dalammenulis esai argumentatif. Berdasarkan hasil temuan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwakemampuan mahasiswa semester 5 prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP-UNILAK TahunAkademik 2017/2018 dalam menulis esai argumentatif dikategorikan ke dalam kemampuan yangbaik.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher found the students’ problem in reading comprehension of recount text. The problem was the students still had difficulties to determine generic structure (Orientation, Event, Re-Orientation), social function and language features when they read recount text and did the random text of recount text. The purpose of this research was to improve students’ reading comprehension of recount text at class VIII of MTs Ummi Fatimah Pekanbaru and what factors influence it. This research was Clasroom Action Research (CAR). The number of participants were 19 students. The researcher used test, observation sheets, field notes, and interview to collect the data. The result of this research showed that the students’ average in based score was 71,05, in cycle I was 82,63. The average in cycle I could achieve the passing grade score is 75. It was found that some factors that influence the students’ improvement in reading comprehension on recount text by using Reading in Detail Technique were Reading in Detail Technique facilitating students to know, understand and determine generic structure, and language features of recount text when they applied it with their discussion group. And also the interesting materials of recount text helped students understand better like experience, event, etc. In conclution the use of Reading in Detail Technique can improve reading comprehension of recount text at class VIII of MTs Ummi Fatimah Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the study is some students wrongly order the word in a sentence as the result of word by word translation and they translate it using translation machine like Google translate so that it is still has an errors in sentence or word. By doing the project uploaded as subtitle in form of video and music in students’ You Tube channel, so around the world see it and become evaluation to the next translator become a good translator. The research aimed to find out the common lexical errors in subtitling projects at the eighth semester students of English Education Department. The research design was descriptive quantitative. Subject the research was 20 students. The instrument was documentation. From the data analysis by rater’s one, it was found that students made lexical error was 136 cases included in semantic confusion was 44 cases with percentages 32.35% was the common lexical error. From the rater’s two was 109 lexical errors still with semantic confusion was 40 cases with percentage 36.69%. It means that the students had enough English vocabulary but they do not know the usage of words in sentences when translate it. Also, it means that students need more practice in translation because of some errors still happen.

Abstract

The difficulty of students writing recount was found at MTs Hasanah Pekanbaru. The students could not write good recount text because of lack of vocabulary and lack of knowledge about recount text. In addition, the students hope that the use of technology in teaching because the strategy is not interesting enough that makes creativity low in writing. Knowing the effects of using Edmodo on learning English that can help the teacher to present the materials and help the students to find and develop the ideas and into elements of recount text at the eighth grade of MTs Hasanah Pekanbaru. This research was a quasi-experimental research. The sample was two classes VIII.4 with 26 students and VIII.5 with 24 students. After conducting this research using Edmodo, the results of the post-test scores of the experimental class were higher than the pre-test scores that were with less effective level. This can be seen from the average post-test score of the experimental class was 52.83, and it was increased from the pre-test score was 30.63 with a gain of 22.2 and N-gain 0.31. The average post-test on the control was 33.69, and it was lower than the experimental class with the gain 8.1 and N-gain 0.1. As the conclusion, there was a significance effect of the students who received in class experimental using Edmodo than the students who did not received classroom instruction using Edmodo in recognizing a recount text.

Abstract

This Classroom Action Research (CAR) aimed to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery by applying theword chain game as a teaching technique. The students of SMPN 20 Pekanbaru particularly at grade VIII.6 were the participants of the research. There were 39 students who were taught by using word chain game to improve their vocabulary mastery. The Findings shows there was improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery using the word chain game, it can be seen from the students’ score and the learning atmosphere. The data reveals, the students score was 81.2. The data also showing interesting, active, and joyful in the learning process. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the word chain game can help the students of SMPN 20 Pekanbaru at grade VIII.6 to improve their vocabulary mastery. This research finding implies that the use of the word chain game can be used in learning English particularly in teaching andlearning vocabulary.

Abstract

This research is based on the needs to investigate the students’ ability in writing a research proposalfor the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and EducationUniversity of Lancang Kuning. This research aims at analyzing the students’ ability of the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Lancang Kuning in writing a research proposal. The method employed in this research is qualitative method with survey research design. The total number of population in this research were 132 students. The sample elected were 20 students. Based on the data which have been collected and analyzed, it were found that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal categorized into “middle”. The average score achieved was 67.1. It was categorized into middle. Based on the research finding above, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal is categorized into middle. This result is in line with the analysis of writing a research proposal using scoring rubric available in this research.

Abstract

This research is based on the needs analysis as well as to evaluate the students’ ability inanswering the questions in TOEFL. This is done because the score of TOEFL is used as one of therequirement to join thesis exam at English Education Department, Faculty of Teachers Training andEducation University of Lancang Kuning. This research aims at analyzing the students’ ability in answeringTOEFL test. The method employed in this research was quantitative method with descriptive quantitativeresearch design. The population of this research were the students at the 7th semester which were consisted of55 students. All the population became the sample of this research. In this research, the researcher collectedthe data by using the TOEFL test. Then, the result of the test was analyzed by using scoring guideline inTOEFL, then the scores were categorized into some levels of ability. The result of the test showed that thescores obtained by the students were mostly under 450 and categorized into low level ability (ExtremelyLimited User). It can be concluded that the students’ ability in taking TOEFL test is categorized into lowlevel ability.
