Abstract

Students at SMP Islam Plus Jannatul Firdaus Pekanbaru had problems in understanding the text when reading process, those were because: the students ought to construct of generic structure of descriptive text namely identification and description. The students ought to comprehend the contents of identification. The students ought to comprehend the contents of description. Then, the researcher tested based-score of reading descriptive text, the researcher found that the students’ mean score was just 68. This research aimed to improve the students’ ability in reading descriptive text by using Questioning the Author (QtA) Strategy. Thus, this research conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of one cycles. There were 15 students at Grade VII of SMP Islam Plus Jannatul Firdaus Pekanbaru as the participants of the research. To gain the data, the researcher used four instruments namely: test, observation, field note, and interview. The result of the reading test in cycle 1 (78.33) was better than the based-score. The factors influeced the changing of students’ ability in reading descriptive text were the vocabulary mastery, the condition of the class, and absolutely the strategy used by the teacher in teaching reading. In conclusion, Questioning the Author (QtA) strategy can improve the students’ ability in reading descriptive text.

Abstract

At The First Semester of English Students’ Department at Faculty of Teacher Training andEducation LancangKuning University, the researcher found that the students had a problem inhad grammar error in writing. That was why researcher conducted this research that aimedtoanalyze the English errors faced by the first semester of English Students Department atFaculty of Teachers Training and EducationLancangKuning University.This research wasDescriptive Quantitative Research. The participants of the research were 36 students. Incollecting the data in this research, the researcher used test and interview as the instrument. Theresult of data showed that the students had 176 errors in verb tenses, 8 errors in to be, 5 errors incorrect sentence and 9 in adverb of time with the percentage were 31,38 % in true or falsequestion and 27,5 % in multiple choice test. In conclusion, The students had a lot of errors inapplied verb tense, adverb of time, correct sentence, and to be.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding the significant differences in achievement between the students who are taught speaking by using the Pecha Kucha and those who are taught by using the Picture Series. This study was an experimental research which employed a quasi experimental design of two classes: one as the experimental A group taught using Pecha Kucha, and the other was the experiment B group taught using the Picture Series. Each class had 21 and 20 students. So the total number in the sample were 41 students in second semesters of English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Lancang Kuning University. The instruments was a speaking test. The data from tests were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The result shows that Asym. Sig. (2-tailed)> Significant level that is 0.314 > 0,05, so Ho is accepted in which the students who were taught speaking through Pecha Kucha achieved a similar performance with the students who were taught speaking through Picture Series. This means that there is no significance difference in achievement between the students in both groups. Furthermore, the students were seen to be more active and creative in expressing their ideas.

Abstract

This qualitative research was conducted to determine the benefits, reasons, experiences, knowledge of students in the development of writing instruments, students' understanding of descriptive paragraphs and Malay culture as local content in the classroom. This research is a survey research conducted in October 2020 and involved 50 respondents in grades VI, VII, IX of SMP Negeri 3 Kabun. To take the sample, the researcher used random sampling technique. The questionnaire is used as an instrument consisting of 17 questions which are then analyzed descriptively with an opinion that has been surveyed by researchers. To answer the researcher's question, the technique used is observation to analyze the completed questionnaire. The findings reveal that stationery is still used in modern times, students can also understand descriptive paragraphs. Students experience an increase in the value of writing descriptive paragraphs while some students are still unable to write descriptive paragraphs, students' understanding of using blog media is very good as a medium of learning and make students more interested so that it fosters motivation, teaching materials will be clearer and can be understood by students and allow students to master teaching objectives better, learning methods will be more varied, not boring students and students doing more learning activities. Riau Malay culture has not yet been applied to local content. If it is applied, it will make students understand the culture will increasingly develop among students.
