Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine which AMT has the greatest perceived impact on producer’s value and to identify which AMTs has been most successfully employed. The study population consists of senior manufacturing executives in electrical and electronic firms located in the northern region of Malaysia. The study addresses the senior manufacturing executives’ perceptions on how well specific AMTs have achieved the expectation of the firms implementing them. They are selected as respondents because of their understanding of the technology and their effects, and because as top manufacturing decision makers, their opinions are likely to shape the future technology of the organization. This study found that the type of AMT that perceived the greatest impact on producer’s value is Flexible Manufacturing System, due to its high effects on two dimensions of producer’s value: quality and cost while Just-in-Time is found to be the most successfully employed AMT among respondents. The findings of this study are significant as they contribute to the AMT literature especially in the context of Electrical and Electronic firms. Keywords: advanced manufacturing technology, producer’s value

Abstract

This paper explores the green supply chain management practices adoption among Malaysian ISO 14001 certified manufacturing companies. The green practices that are measured in this research are eco-design, green purchasing and reverse logistics. This study used survey to collect responses from 616 manufacturing companies, with a response rate of 24.68%. The findings provided evidence that the level of green supply chain management practices has been implemented to a greater extent among responding firms. Specifically, the results have empirically proven that eco-design was the most highly adopted green practices among these manufacturing firms. In view of these findings, green supply chain management practices that involve external relationship with suppliers and customers (green purchasing and reverse logistics) have comparatively lower adoption than internally-focused green supply chain management practices (eco-design), which involves fewer external relationships. This paper provides the possible reasons for eco-design being the most adopted green practise among Malaysian ISO 14001 certified manufacturing companies and provides suggestions for firms in view of enhancing their sustainable performance through promoting eco-design in their green practices.

Abstract

A research survey has been widely known by many scholars and is very important in data collection; however, it has a real disadvantage of its lower response rate. This is possibly due to incomplete comprehension on how this survey can be made to work effectively especially in supply chain industries that deal with confidentiality and various parties interest. Therefore, this study aims to provide comprehensive strategies that should be conducted to improve response rates. Meeting this aim, this study reviewed studies focusing on strategies to prepare a suggested survey to increase its response rate. Based on an extensive research in literature and local field, the authors found articles considered appropriate to be included in this synthesis. Two strategies were found to improve response rate using a effective survey: designing questionnaire and practical strategies. Designing questionnaire strategy has prominent factors in the beginning steps before sending a questionnaire. The latter is a critical step to get respondents feel that they like to fill a questionnaire. This study contributes to academic literature about how to improve response rate using comprehensive strategies where the previous studies have explained those findings partly.
