Abstract

This paper deals with the most recent religion-based conflict on the island of Madura involving some Shi’ite and their opponents. The conflict took place mid of 2011. The paper traces the history of the conflict, the parties involved in it, and the various factors that triggered it to happen. It argues that although the conflict is local, it nonetheless reflects the larger and most “global” kind of conflict between the Sunnis and the Shi’is. Considering that the Muslims of Madura are always NU in their theology and tradition, the paper asks to what extend does NU lose its influence on the island in this particular regard. Theories concerning conflict will be used to explain this rare development. Preliminary assumption might however be said that the conflict reflects (1) the need of the Madurese agrarian society for a better harmonious state of life, or else (2) the need to punish those who have gone astray from the traditional religious belief, or reflects (3) the latent power struggle between various religious denomination on the island. These are the problems that the paper will try to address.

Abstract

Modernism believes that reason will eventually push over religion. Knowledge is considered capable to answer various mysteries that have enforced human to rely on religion. Modernism then is marked by the world that is more unified for the exchanging information stream and economical material. The transnational company and information technology play a pivotal role in shaping into global village. In this circumstance, religion deals with such unbelievable challenge. Religion which claims as the savior of human life is finally replaced by media. But, since 70s decade, a kind of new religious movement tries to challenge this modernization flow. This is what so called religious fundamentalism. This movement leans everything on the holy scripture as the only truth; therefore, it has exclusive and militant character. If modernism is suspected as the one that has thought out any kind of human crisis, then, does religion provide the solution? Although religion is expected to answer all crisis of modernity, its irrationality and exclusivism do not fit with modernism. Religion that is needed by modern society is religion that could be heard by modern ear and in the same time could affirm the affection to human being. Rationalism without love will drag people in a tragic humanism.

Abstract

This article is aimed to assess the progress of Islamic and religious studies at State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya throughout the view of new paradigm on Islamic studies. It attempts to seek whether there is a shifting paradigm from parochial Islamic studies to dialogical Islamic studies that could accommodate contemporary social scientific instruments. It is based on one core question, “is the Islamic studies at UIN Sunan Ampel—especially the Department of Comparative Study of Religions—still based on normative-doctrinal studies or based on historical critics?” This paper took four undergraduate theses as a sample, starting from 2011 back to forty years before. Each thesis represents one-decade period. In order to analyze religious studies at the Department of Comparative Study of Religions will be a strategic stage to observe methodological perspective, namely insider-outsider perspective. Having examined all of these theses, this article concludes that Islamic religious studies at the Department of Comparative Study of Religions have not changed at all. It shows signs of stagnating after four decade of teaching religious studies in this department.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the reasons why violence and religious conflict occurred in Bojonegoro district do not lead to radical actions. Departing from the fundamental question, “why does violence and religious conflict not extend into radical actions even though the potential for religious radicalization exists and even explode into destructive social conflict?”, this study found that there are two main factors that make religious life among believers in Bojonegoro keep running in balance and harmonious way, namely cultural and structural factors. The most important cultural factor is the existence of cross-cutting affiliation where there are neutral social spaces that make people from different backgrounds meet without being troubled by their primordial identity. Meanwhile, structural factors that prevent radical action and religious conflict are the presence of the State as a neutral and decisive party; institutionalization of assurance of freedom of faith; and the activeness of the State in early prevention and conflict mediation.

Abstract

The discussion about Islam and local culture has resulted in a number of monumental academic works. The relation of Islam and the Javanese culture along with its dynamics have frequently colored intellectual debates in the field. Among the din of such fascinating academic debates, Islam Madura has been nearly neglected as an uninteresting academic discourse to observe. It has been argued that Madura is viewed as a ?back door? of Java. It implies that observing Java means observing Madura automatically. This study seeks to raise the issue of contestation over the meaning of Islam within the relational context between Islam and the local culture of Madura society. Based on field research conducted under the light of Beatty?s multi-vocality concept, the study finds that Islam Madura is a communal identity, but it defines nothing about the Madurese Muslim community in general. Although each group acknowledges Islam as a shared identity, every individual and group, or sub-group, will have no a common understanding about the meaning of Islam. Islam has, certainly, unified all the Madurese people within a common perspective of mankind, God, and worldly matters, but this identity represents no one and does not specifically define any conception of anyone. The meaning of Islam Madura has been, therefore, endlessly knitted within compromising and synthesis process.

Abstract

Abstract The question of whether a friendly Islamic jargon still deserve to be attached to the Indonesian Islam has emerged frequently in a recent time. The high rate of intolerance and violence along the lines with the Indonesian Islamic narratives has raised this question. However, every Islamic thought and movement is always in the process of dialogue and negotiation among various developing discourses and movements. The socio-political situation also affects the development of the discourse, including the choices of movements. The discussion of Islamic thought in Indonesia has always been dynamic and has been in contestation and negotiation. The face of Indonesian Islam always changes along with the existing dynamics. Currently, the established Islamic mass organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah are facing a new Islamic situation in the post-Reformation. While the official Islamic narratives of NU and Muhammadiyah are still on a moderate character, various phenomena in the field have shown that various meetings and interrelationships between existing discourses and Islamic movements have begun to form a new Islamic landscape. For instance, there are some Muhammadiyah officials who openly become leaders of the MTA (Majelis Tafsir Al-qur’an/Al-Qur'an Tafsir Council) in their areas. Likewise, there are a few NU kiais who are sympathetic to the methods of preaching of FPI (Front Pembela Islam/Islamic Defender Front), and even become its leaders. These kiais consider what’s FPI fighting for is in accordance with what they read in their classical religious references (kitab kuning). Young generations from the both organizations have also started to form a new Islamic identity.
