Abstract

This paper deals with a cultural fraction of the Javanese Muslim called Islam Mataraman. Historically Islam Mataraman originated from the Islam that flourished during the era of the Mataram Kingdom in an inland Javanese island. This paper tries to explore the unique characters of this group of the Javanese Muslims that distinguish them from others culturally and politically. It maintains that Islam Mataraman is not only about culture, politics or belief, but also about the integration between them all. Integration is the key word in this paper. The paper also tries to show that in integration process, religion is not always the key player. In fact we are not interested in discussing the winner and the looser in this process. We are rather interested in showing that the integration is unique and complicated process, and that Islam in this part of Java is a perfect model of how religion, culture and politics can converge without there being a sense of domination or marginalization. To carry out its task, the paper will consult not only the local authoritative scholars in this field, but also the international experts so as to have a balanced view of the problem. At the end, we will also try to discuss how this integration imply on the political attitudes of the Muslim Mataraman.

Abstract

This article elaborates the phenomenon of fundamentalism and the future of Islamic political ideology. Islamic ideology represents religious views, ideas and movements which aspire to bring Islam into practice in state and societal affairs. One variant of Islamic ideologies is fundamentalism which endeavors to return religious practices back to the pristine Islam based on the Qur’ân and al-Hadîth. Fundamentalism rejects all modes of understand-ding which are not based on the Qur’ân and al-Hadîth, and refuses secular methodology in interpreting the Qur’ân. This type of Islamic ideology found its momentum when Saudi Arabia regime officially adopted Wahhabism, and when Egyptian intellectuals were united to fight against modernity. Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt became seeding ground for fundamentalism. Some young muslim scholars who studied there became agents for the dissemination dan transmission of the fundamentalist ideology throughout the world. In Indonesia, this ideology have developed since independence and the drafting of the constitution. In the Indonesian context, resistence from traditionalist and nationalit groups were so strong that enable to dam up the spread of fundamentalis ideas. However, fundamentalist ideology remains an important challenge for the future of Indonesian Islam.

Abstract

For several decades, the role of Muslim female in political arena is limited and still dominated by Muslim male figures. Religious doctrines seem to take part in constructing women into social life. Women are still perceived as secondary person before men, having much emotional feelings, and incapable to handle such social problems. It has been much demonstrated by traditional scholars that the providence of men is being a leader, having much power, and is rightly superior to women. In this case, contemporary feminist Muslim such like Fatima Mernissi, Riffat Hassan, Asghar Ali Engineer, and Fazlur Rahman has contended this notion. They argue that there was possibly different impression on the interpretation of Qur’an that affects Qura’nic worldview towards the existence of women. According to them, Qur’an was precisely revealed to liberate women from social subjection. This article scrutinizes methodological framework in establishing a new light of understanding Qur’anic verse on women, especially on the issues on the origins of women creature, leadership, attestation and the right for inheritance.

Abstract

The article discusses the role of wali (the Muslim saints), sultan, kiai, and santri within religious tradition and politics in Java. The wali (commonly known as Walisongo or ?the Nine Saints?) were people who initially spread Islam in Java. In their efforts to develop Islam, Walisongo also equipped their pupils with religious knowledge to spread Islam in the future. This is from such process the transfer of Islamic knowledge was primarily set off. Once the transition periods began, the role of wali had subsequently vanished and replaced by the formal ruler, namely sultan. The Mataram Sultanate was the biggest Islamic sultanate ever in the history of Java. Owing to the supremacy of the Sultan, Kiai Kasan Besari?as an ample example of kiai mentioned in this article?built a pesantren in an area called tanah perdikan (a tax haven) in Tegalsari Ponorogo, East Java, which became an origin of institutionalization of the pesantren in Java. The Sultan provided the pesantren both material aids and other kinds of support, including entrusting his sons to learn religious knowledge in it. It had been also followed by the royal courtiers and the best cadres of the sultanate who subsequently became litterateurs of the Kingdom.

Abstract

Abstract

The history of the involvement of NU in politics cannot be separated from the elites of this organization in East Java. The variety of cultures that flourishes in the province strongly influences the nature and characteristics of the NU elites. This paper is an attempt to deal with the relationship between those subcultures and political participation. It focuses only on five subcultures, Mataraman, coastal areas, Arek, Madurese, and Pendalungan. The NU kiais are perceived by their followers to have played double roles as religious leaders (dealing with spiritual aspects) and community leaders (relating to socio-political aspects). Locality and its growing culture become a key factor. Locality makes a contribution to the growth of understanding about politics. Mataraman NU elites always keep their relationship with formal religious issues, and there is a tendency among them to separate religion from politics. In contrast, Madura, Pendalungan, Pesisiran (north coast), and Arek areas tend to combine religion and politics.
