Abstract

In this era, the importance of English leads people to introduce English education even in preschools. English education for preschoolers isbelieved to help fosterchildren’s language and cognitive developments. However, to achieve this benefit, a sound curriculum is required.Since creating a sound English curriculum is not an easy thing to do, a careful examination on English in the preschool curriculum needs to be performed. This study therefore aims to find out the goals of integrating English as an intra-school curriculum in a preschool in Bandung and the teacher’s attempts to achieve these goals in terms of four basic components of curriculum taken fromCayadong (2011) and Tyler (Posner,1992); the objectives, the materials, the methods and the assessments. A descriptive study using a document analysis, an interview and an observation as the data collection techniques was employed. The finding showed that English was integrated to help children to be able to communicate using English in school and family context in a simple language. Theme-based teaching and learning using drilling and total physical response (TPR) as methods were conducted to achieve the goals. Meanwhile, to make sure of the goals attainment, students wereassessed by using observations and tests.

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates the realization  of disagreement strategies employed by Indonesian speakers.  The strategies are then related to the interlocutor’s level of power. The data is collected using DCT Type B adapted from Azis (2000) and analysed using adapted disagreement strategies from Muntigl and Turnbull (1998) and Chen (2006). The results shows that Indonesian speakers tend to use different disagreement strategies to different level of power of the interlocutor.  To the interlocutor with the higher power (the superior), the speakers tend to use counterclaims and no disagreement strategies. In addition, to the speakers with the same level of power, the contradiction strategy is preferred. In the meantime, to the interlocutor with the lower level of power, the speakers are likely to choose challenge. These various selections of disagreement strategies are also influenced by concept of FTAs of Brown and Levinson (1987).Keywords: disagreement, power, face, FTAs

Abstract

This study explores the way male and female students use process types in recount texts to represent their experiences.  To attain these goals, the qualitative design was employed and the main data were the students’ recount texts. The texts were then analysed using the transitivity framework, proposed by Halliday (1994), to unveil the representation of experiences by male and female students. The results indicate that the students from both genders have a quite identical way of representing their experiences. Both groups use a lot of Material, Mental and Relational-Attributive processes. The domination of these processes is high likely to be influenced by the social function and generic structure of Recount texts. Thus, in terms of process types, instead of gender, the genre has more influence on how students represent their experiences.
