Abstract

This research aims to determine the extent of students' abilities in learning English, especially in terms of how much their vocabulary mastery increases. The subjects in this research were the first semester students of STIKES Al-Fatah Bengkulu for the 2023-2024 which consist of 20 students. This research was carried out as classroom action research which is implemented in 2 cycles using the Word Chain Games activities during the learning process. The research results show that the Word Chain Games method increases students' vocabulary mastery. Students also become become more active during the implementation of Word Chain Games activities which indicates that the activities are suitable in engaging students’ participation in English learning process, especially in vocabulary activities.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the impress of Question Answer Relationships (QARs) Strategy on students’ reading comprehension. The subjects of this research were the first semester students of STKES Al Fatah Bengkulu in 2024/2025 academic years which consists 62 students. This research used experimental research was divided into two classes. They are experimental class and control class. The data was obtained by using reading comprehension tests in students’ skills of understanding reading text of report texts in order to complete data. The data analysis was applied t – test analysis. The research result showed the Question Answer Relationships (QARs) Strategy gave significant effect toward sudents’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the coherence in writing personal recount essay that had been written by students of Stikes Al Fatah Bengkulu for second semester. This research also to know the coherence in students writing for personal recount essay which was focused on firstly: content of essay that consisted of introduction, content of essay and closing of paragraph. Secondly, focused on language of structure or grammatical and writing organization in essay. The population of this research was 30 students of second semester of Stikes Al Fatah Bengkulu by using purposive sampling method. The result of this research showed that there are 2 essays got 6.66% in very good category, 16 essays got 53.33% in good category, 10 essays got 33.33% in barely acceptable essay, 2 essays got 6.66% in poor essay. At least, there were 18 essays showed the coherence in writing were better than 12 other essays.

Abstract

This research meant to find out how effective is graphic organizer technique to develop students’ reading comprehension in argumentative text and in what way students can perceive of using graphic organizer technique for contributing learning process. The research was designed by experimental study with 50 students as the samples at second semester students of Stikes Al Fatah Bengkulu. The reading test and questionnaire were using as the instruments of this research. The findings of the research  revealed that (1) using of graphic organizers was an effective method to increase students’ comprehensible in reading questions like finding main idea, finding the specific information, making inference, understanding vocabulary and determine references, (2) the students perceived positively responses concerning to use the  graphic organizer in learning process.

Abstract

This research used descriptive method. It was used to get description about something by analyzing, interpreting, and concluding. In this case, the researcher described about implicit meaning found that exist in Garfield comic strips in May 2012 edition. In collecting the data, the researcher downloaded Garfield comic strip May 2012 Edition from official website of Garfield in http://www.Garfield.com. The results of this research showed that all of the comic strips contain implicit meaning. Furthermore based on the research question, the implicit meanings found in Garfield comic strips were divided into two types, they were particularized implicit and generalized implicit meaning, if we know the background knowledge of the Garfield we can use particularized implicit meaning, but if we didn’t knew we can use generalized implicit meaning. In this case, the comic strips were dominated by Particularized implicit meaning type. The total of Particularized implicit meaning were 19 comic strips, and the rests were 13 comic strips. The conclusion of this research is every edition of Garfield of comic strips has implicit meaning in every strip, so to know what the implicit meaning in every strip is we must know the background knowledge of Garfield. The researcher expects the result of this research will be useful for the english students who need the result of this research as references in learning pragmatics. The researcher also hopes that this research will inspire other researcher to analyze the implicit meaning in other comic’s strips.
