Abstract

The spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia has paralyzed almost in all system in our live. It significantly affect education system in all over the world. The physical distancing emerge in order to stop the covid 19 transmission.Teachers have to set the way of learning for students on several learning platforms so students can learn effectively and attractively to prevent the boredom at home. No exception for learning English for Specific Purposes. This study is going to describe students perception in the implementation of English for Specific Purposes in STIE Bina Karya during the pandemic. This study applied the descriptive qualitative approach which took the data from 108 informants from students who had taken two semesters in pandemic situation. The result of this study were the ESP implementation during the pandemic did not run 100%. Only two from four skills were assessed by the lecturer through the Google Classroom and Youtube Channel. But so far, the informants/the students were still enjoyed learning ESP even in online class. Keywords: pandemic, ESP, perception

Abstract

Teaching design that always upgrading are believe will improve learners’ achievements. The importance of English mastery for management study program will support their education and also carreer. The students ability in English mastery should be improved through many activities during their study. Therefore, lectures should analyze their needs based on ESP before conducting teaching and learning process to meet their future career, as a business manager. Having a good communication and ability to solve a problem become their main demands. Speaking is one of the most essential skill which learners should master well to bridge them all. However, their speaking skill is still lack. They need exposure to improve it. Thus, from the data, mostly informants want to have more semesters to practice English. This research was a qualitative descriptive. The data were obtainned from the first year of 144 management students through interviews, close-ended questionaire, and observation. As the findings, emphasizing speaking abilities is the best way for management students to improve their English. It ought to be used in dynamic, students-center classroom while the lecturers play the role as facilitator. These components seek to raise students’ sense of self-worth and get them ready for the workforce.

Abstract

STIE Bina Karya students where their learning focus is not on English, but they have to take English for a Specific Purpose as one of the general subjects. Therefore, delivering English for specific purposes material requires an appropriate learning method. This research aims to describe the application of the Role-Playing Method for STIE Bina Karya students. This Class Action Research applied two cycles. The research subjects are 70 students from the first semester who were chosen randomly. This research used tests, questionnaires, and observations in collecting the data. In analyzing the data, the student's correct answer was divided by the number of items and times 100 to get the score. Research results showed that there is an increase in learning outcomes by applying the role-playing method. In the initial test, student learning outcomes is 35.73. Then in cycle I, it increased to 61.14 and increased again to 77.36 in cycle II. Questionnaire data also proved that the Role-Playing method can not only improve student learning outcomes but can also increase students' non-English study program interest in learning English for specific purposes.
