Abstract

Having foremost significance in any ESP classroom, course readings are known as one of the most visible parts of any ESP instructing program. Playing a vital part where English is used as an outside dialect, such reading material ought to have a few highlights on which the needs and targets of an ESP teaching program are met. Concerning such a significance, making use of McDonough and Shaw’s (2003) model, this study evaluate fundamentally the current status of the ESP book used in English for informatics at UMNU Kebumen. The evaluation tries:1)to show the significance of ESP materials development as well as evaluation; (2) to present the fundamental drawbacks in the book; and, (3) to show some practical recommendation  and arrangements to handle the noteworthy issues and drawbacks of such ESP textbooks.

Abstract

Improving the accessibility of higher education for students is an important issue in facing the challenges of globalization and the current development of information technology. This community service aims to illustrate the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) cadres in encouraging the accessibility of NU tertiary institutions for students. In this context, NU cadres act as a liaison between students in the community and NU universities. This community service was carried out in the Bonorowo sub-district, Kebumen Regency in April 2023. The service involved 30 participants using the counseling method. From the results of the service, it was found that the knowledge of the counseling participants related to information on NU higher education including registration procedures, types of scholarships available, available majors, and knowledge about campus life increased. The service team suggested that counseling about the accessibility of NU higher education for students be carried out continuously. It is hoped that continuous counseling will provide more accurate information to prospective students so that it will increase the interest of the santri community to study.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores EFL preservice teachers' perspectives on reciting the Qur'an with English translation as a strategy to strengthen discipline and English proficiency. Descriptive mixed methods was employed at the English Education Department of UMNU Kebumen, involving 47 preservice teachers from second and fourth semesters. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation over one semester. The findings revealed that students held highly positive perspectives, perceiving the practice as an educational consequence rather than punishment. The activity effectively reduced tardiness frequency, enhanced students' awareness of punctuality, and facilitated internalization of discipline as personal value. Regarding language development, students reported perceived improvements in vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation skills, and recognition of Islamic-English lexical equivalents. The integration of religious values made English learning more meaningful and identity-relevant. All interviewed students expressed intention to implement similar approaches in their future teaching careers with contextual adaptations. This study contributes to the theoretical frameworks of Liberating Discipline Pedagogy, Sociocultural Theory, and CLIL in Pre-Service Teacher Education by demonstrating how religious texts can function as mediational tools for simultaneous behavioral regulation and perceived language development. The findings offer practical implications for English teachers and curriculum developers in Islamic educational contexts.
