Abstract

Abstract. This study attempts to analyze the representation of sexuality and Javanese culture in the movie poster for "Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa" using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The movie poster, as a visual text, serves not only as a promotional tool but also as a way to construct meaning. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method, which involves observing the visual and textual elements and classifying them into Peirce's three categories: icon, index, and symbol. To interpret the meaning, this study also uses theoretical triangulation by linking semiotics to Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Javanese cultural studies. The research findings indicate that this poster actively commodifies sexuality within the context of Javanese culture by combining elements of the Gowok tradition with Kamasutra eroticism as a selling point. Visual elements, such as the woman's open back and the text "Uncut Version 21+", are seen as an attempt to exploit sensuality as a marketing strategy. Thus, this poster has the potential to actively simplify the complex meaning of Gowok and place it within a commercial framework.
