The steps of integrations between the local sociocultural and English writing skill are that (1) instructors teachs what their social values (attitude, norms, moral, etc) and what their cultural delineations (traditions, arts, historical building, etc) to learners, (2) the writing strategy is taught by instructors in terms of planning, drafting, editing and final product, (3) instructors reqiure students to write their own written text. The virtual media can be utilized at all of those steps. Further discussion in the future is needed among experts in education, linguist and curriculum maker to design and achieve the fruitful goals.

Abstract

Research examining sociocultural perspectives in online EFL learning within the Indonesian context remains limited. This study aimed to explore students’ sociocultural perspectives in digitally mediated EFL learning and to examine whether sociocultural interaction patterns differed across gender. Using a descriptive quantitative design, the study involved 27 senior high school students in East Java, comprising 21 females and 6 males. Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from established sociocultural indicators—social act, distributed context, invention perspective, dialogism, and intertextuality—and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Mann–Whitney U test. The findings indicate that most students demonstrated positive sociocultural engagement in online learning, including understanding instructional explanations, seeking help, using additional learning resources, and participating in discussions with teachers and peers. The analysis further revealed no statistically significant differences between male and female students across all sociocultural indicators. These findings suggest that sociocultural interaction in online EFL learning is shaped more by mediated learning environments than by gender differences, offering pedagogical implications for designing interactive and supportive online EFL instruction.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is a language skill that is developed through continuous practice, including in poetry writing. However, in instructional practice, poetry writing activities tend to focus mainly on aesthetic aspects of language and have not widely incorporated more contextual linguistic approaches, particularly pragmatic analysis. In addition, scholarly studies integrating poetry writing with a pragmatic perspective remain relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore poetry writing through a pragmatic analysis approach and to examine its contribution to the development of students’ critical thinking and writing skills. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method by systematically reviewing textbooks, journal articles, and previous studies relevant to poetry writing and pragmatics. The research stages include collecting relevant literature, analyzing the concepts of writing and poetry, examining pragmatic contexts, and synthesizing the relationship between pragmatics and the poetry writing process. The findings indicate that integrating pragmatic analysis into poetry writing instruction has the potential to enhance students’ ability to generate and develop ideas, understand contextual meanings, and foster critical language awareness. The main conclusion of this study emphasizes that a pragmatic approach can serve as a strategic alternative in poetry writing instruction, with pedagogical implications highlighting the need for collaboration between educators and curriculum developers, as well as opportunities for further research examining the relationship among pragmatics, poetry, and learners’ levels of language proficiency.
