Abstract

Wheelchair athletes need to engage into physical activity and sports in order to keep their body functioning for activity for daily living (ADL) or for sporting actions. Sports also are a part of the rehabilitation program since it been introduced by Sir Ludwig Gutmann in England late 1940s. With the growth of sport activity in daily lives of persons with disabilities, it has been rightly perceived that disabled persons could obtain the same physical and emotional benefits from sport as their able-bodied counterparts, leading to an increased need to overcome limitations, opponents and records. The introduction of sports therapy in rehabilitation, as well as further involvement in sports depends on the severity of the injury, might lead a disabled person to either become a non-competitive athlete or a paralympic athlete. Athletes with Spinal cord injury facing problems with their thermoregulatory response. In relation to that, during exercise in the heat, paraplegic athletes demonstrates similar increase in core temperature compared with able-bodied athletes, but at a much lower metabolic rate, reflecting the decreased heat dissipation. Individuals who use wheelchairs vary widely in their level of cardiorespiratory fitness, some being seriously unfit and others are achieving levels that compare closely with those of fit able-bodied athletes. Wheelchair users also should be encouraged to use a hand-propelled rather than a motorized chair in daily life and to eat a diet that is well regulated to avoid accumulation of excess body fat.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the physical fitness profiles among the national powerlifters with disabilities. A total of eight national powerlifting athletes (3 females and 5 males) were recruited and performed 1-RM bench press test, 20-seconds wheelchair push-up test, 50-meter dash, handgrip strength test, and arm crank ergometer test.  The mean value of 1-RM bench press test was 1.78 ± 0.58 with all of the subjects classified as above average. The mean for 20-seconds wheelchair push-up test was 26.00 ± 8.50 repetitions as 75% of the subjects were above average, 12.5% were average, while another 12.5% were below average. The results of 50-meter dash showed that the mean value was 17.35 ± 4.72 seconds. The mean for left handgrip strength test was 38.86 ± 12.95 kg while the mean for right handgrip strength was 37.12 ± 12.77 kg. About 25% of the subjects were above average, 50% were in average rank, while another 25% were below average for the left handgrip strength test. For the right handgrip strength, 12.5% classified as above average, 50% were average, and another 37.5% were below average. All of the subjects were able to finish an arm crank ergometer test as the mean value of the test was 100.50 ± 25.57 RPM. Based on results, muscular strength, power and muscular endurance reveals that subjects are within the range. The future research could incorporate body composition evaluation and anthropometric profiles among powerlifters with disabilities for better understanding of sporting performance.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the level of tourism security and safety in the tandem paragliding aspect in the Kemuning village area. The problem that arose was that there was a tandem paragliding accident, namely a tourist fell on Kemuning Hill, in this accident there was no insurance for tourist accidents. The research uses a mixed method model by taking into account the Kemuning paragliding tourism environment. Analysis of tandem paragliding tourism potential using SKKNI no. 157 of 2019 for tandem paragliding aerospace scouting. Data management uses SPSS 23, and the respondents studied are Kemuning paragliding tandem managers, paragliding tandem pilots, tourists, and parties concerned with the Kemuning tourism tandem. Located in Segoro Mountain, Kemuning Village, Ngargoyoso District, Karanganyar Regency. The research results show that tourism safety data for tandem paragliding in Kemuning village is in the Very Suitable category. There needs to be a new sports tourism sector that supports the main tourism so that it can increase community income and increase the health of tourism visitors.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its predictors among Malaysian vegetarians. The present cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 vegetarians in Malaysia. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviours, psychological distress and sleep quality were collected using a set of self-administered questionnaires. A three-day dietary recall was employed to examine the dietary intake of vegetarians. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality in vegetarians, with a score above five indicating poor sleep quality. A multiple logistic regression model was used to determine how socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviours (smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity level), psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress) and specific dietary macronutrient intakes (carbohydrate, protein and fat) predicted poor sleep quality. The mean sleep duration was 6.0±1.4 hours among vegetarians. The mean PSQI score was 5.4±3.1, with 40.5% of vegetarians experiencing poor sleep quality. Multiple logistic regression found that vegetarians with depression (OR=4.56, 95% CI:1.62‒12.83) and stress (OR=3.07, 95% CI: 1.14‒8.31) had higher odds of poor sleep quality (p<0.05). About two in five (40.5%) vegetarians reported poor sleep quality with depression and stress as significant predictors. Effective sleep education programs are essential for improving sleep hygiene awareness. Psychological screening and mental health interventions for vegetarians with depression and stress are necessary to improve their sleep health.
