Abstract

Reflective thinking is one of the high-level thinking skills that learners must possess. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and to describe the students' reflective mathematical thinking ability for each type of learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). This research used a mixed method. The research class was taken with cluster random sampling. The subjects of this study were 6 students of class in one of junior high school in Purworejo which were selected by purposive sampling by selecting 2 students from each type of learning style. The data collection by using tests, questionnaires, and interviews. The results showed (1) PBL was effective in achieving students’ reflective mathematical thinking ability; (2) mathematical reflective thinking ability of visual subject was unable to draw the analogy of the problems and the visual subject was unable to identify relevant data. The auditory subject was unable to explain correctly the concept used in drawing sketches and unable to understand and identify the concepts. In addition, the auditory subject was less able to identify relevant data. Whether the kinesthetic subject made a mistake in drawing the analogy but he was unable to mention the problems that existed and could not identify the relevant data. In addition, the kinesthetic subject was less able in doing proof by using the concept involved in the proof of argument.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Numeracy ability is the ability to think logically and systematically in solving contextual problems based on data and numbers. However, students' numeracy ability in Indonesia, including in Central Java, is still relatively low. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and mathematical connection ability simultaneously on students' numeracy ability on the material of arithmetic sequences and series in class X MANU 3 Ittihad Bahari Bonang Demak. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The research sample was taken using a cluster random sampling technique, and two classes were obtained, namely class X.1 and X.2. The research instruments were in the form of a self-efficacy questionnaire and a descriptive test to measure mathematical connection and numeracy abilities. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression tests using SPSS 25. The results of the study showed that there was a significant positive relationship simultaneously between self-efficacy and mathematical connection ability on students' numeracy abilities, with a coefficient of determination (R ²) value of 0.599. This means that the two independent variables contributed 59.9% to students' numeracy skills, while 40.1% was influenced by other factors. These results indicate the importance of the role of self-efficacy and mathematical connections in improving students' numeracy skills, as well as being the basis for further research to examine other factors that contribute to the development of numeracy skills.

Abstract

This research aims to achieve two primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to assess the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) by incorporating performance assessment in enhancing students' mathematical communication abilities. Secondly, the study aims to characterize students' mathematical communication abilities to their self-efficacy levels. A mixed-methods approach was employed in this study, with a population comprising 251 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 24 Semarang. Data were gathered through mathematical communication skill tests, self-efficacy questionnaires, and interview guidelines. The experimental group underwent PjBL facilitated by performance assessment, while the control group experienced PjBL alone. Results indicated that the experimental group demonstrated classical mastery of mathematical communication abilities, with higher average and proportional achievements than the control group. PjBL assisted by performance assessment proved to be more effective than PjBL alone. Analysis of mathematical communication abilities based on students' self-efficacy levels revealed that (1) subjects with high self-efficacy fulfilled all indicators; (2) subjects with moderate self-efficacy fulfilled indicators one and two, were less proficient in fulfilling indicators four and were unable to fulfill indicator three; and (3) subjects with low self-efficacy fulfilled indicator one but had not yet achieved indicators two, three, and four.
