Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji strategi pembelajaran bahasa mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing; khususnya mengenai jenis strategi yang paling sering digunakan serta kecenderungan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan strategi-strategi tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metoda studi kasus deskriptif (descriptif case study) yang melibatkan 26 mahasiswa Prodi Agrobisnis Fakultas Pertanian di sebuah universitas swasta di Jawa Barat. Mereka dipilih secara acak berstrata (stratified random sampling). Instrument yang digunakan adalah satu set kuesioner yang diadaptasi dari Oxford (1990). Hasil kajian menunjukan bahwa mahasiswa tidak begitu menyadari akan penggunaan strategi pembelajaran belajar bahasa dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing karena mereka jarang menggunakannya. Namun, mahasiswa memiliki prioritas strategi affective (30.8%). Hal ini menunjukan bahwa mahasiswa memerlukan pengendalian emosi yang memadai, motivasi, dan sikap keberminatan yang kuat dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Kemudian diikuti oleh strategi metacognitive (28.8%), compensation (13.5%), cognitive (5.8%), social (3.85%), dan memory (1.9%). Penemuan lainnya adalah ternyata mahasiswa laki-laki menggunakan berbagai jenis strategi disbanding mahasiswa perempuan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, diharapkan mahasiswa dapat lebih mengenal dan belajar strategi pembelajaran bahasa asing secara komprehensif, yang harus di terapkan secara berkesinambungan untuk mecapai keberhasilan.

Abstract

This study aims to outline students' perceptions about the use of collaborative learning to foster critical thinking skills; and how the use of collaborative learning helps improve students' critical thinking. This study uses a qualitative case study involving 23 third semester students in the English Language Education Program of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Science forming into six groups consisting of 3-4 students. Primary data is the result of group interviews, which are analyzed through several steps such as transcription, coding, categorization, condensation, and interpretation. The results of this study provide evidence for the description of students' high perceptions of the use of collaborative learning to foster critical thinking skills. In addition, students have a great awareness of collaborative learning that influences critical thinking skills. In addition, they also believe that critical thinking offers many benefits, including: 1) building teamwork, 2) implementing discussion, 3) respecting each other, 4) saving time, 5) self-reflection, 6) reducing the workload, and 6) sharing knowledge. Apart from inadequate knowledge about critical thinking knowledge, students succeed in showing elements of their critical thinking by expressing opinions, making comments, drawing conclusions, solving problems, and producing effective arguments during the discussion process

Abstract

The present study is aimed at finding out 1) students’ voices and their difficulties towards Academic Writing, and 2) students’ awareness of Argumentative essay. This study employs a qualitative case study involving twelve six semester students of English Department and enrolling Academic Writing course. The class is conducted online using Google Meet. The participants are selected purposively and divided into two category: six students with six years writing enjoyment and six students with three years writing enjoyment. The primary data are obtained through semi structured interview and students’ document Argumentative text conducted online. The result of interview are transcribed, categorized, coded, and interpreted. Meanwhile, the students’ document of Argumentative text are analyzed by utilizing the generic structure checklist of argumentative essay adopted from Derewianka (1990). The findings reveals that all of students perceived Academic Writing positively. Meanwhile, all of students’ writing ability are hampered by their less ability in organizing idea systematically, grammar, vocabulary and diction. Specifically, students who have six years writing enjoyment faces difficulties in Academic writing due to their lack of understanding the instruction and managing assignment. In contrary, the students with three years writing enjoyment find Academic Writing difficult due to low management of revision and less enthusiastic and motivation. The result of students’ document of Argumentative texts indicate that students’ awareness on Argumentative essay still need improvement. It is recommended for the further research on related topic to investigate the novel cases using the different method.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effectiveness of Jigsaw on reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. The problems in this research are whether jigsaw has  significant difference in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text between students who are taught by using jigsaw learning and those who are taught by using Grammar-Translation Method and how the participants in the experimental group response toward the jigsaw instruction after the treatment. The population of this research was the eleventh grade student of Senior High School in  Tasikmalaya in the academic year 2016/2017 consisting of 48 students. The instruments, achievement test used to collect data were pre-test and post-test to experimental and control groups. They served to measure students’ reading comprehension of analytical exposition text by using jigsaw . The instrument, questionnaire was used to collect data about the participants’ response towards  using jigsaw  in comprehending analytical exposition text. From the research, it could be obtained the t-observed value was 2.410,  whereas t-critical was 2.021.It means the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the nul hypothesis is rejected. It can be concluded that there is significant difference in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text between students who are taught by using jigsaw learning and those who are taught by using it. Keywords: Jigsaw , reading comprehension, analytical exposition text

Abstract

Abstract This community service is carried out with the aim of increasing the knowledge and the empowerment of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat on marketing of food products and e-writing using WhatsApp Group. The activity involves 9 members of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat in the area of Ciung Wanara Cultural Tourist Attraction who represents kiosk trader. All participants are given a training of food product marketing and Electronic-based writing of English language using WhatsApp Group. The training uses extention activity, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and WhatsApp Group screenshot documents as the primary data. The result of training shows that the knowledge of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat on marketing of food product achieves 3,8 on average of all 5 test items with the completion value of 76%. Meanwhile, the knowledge of English Advertising Slogan obtains 4,9 on average of all 5 test items with the completion value of 98%. The skill of e-writing includes word, phrase, and sentence levels forming the slogans for food product marketing. The results obtained from Focus GroupDiscussion suggest that the training or learning using WhatsApp Group impacts on the acquisition of knowledge and empowerment of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat due the assistance and effectivness of WhatsApp Group. Abstrak Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan keberdayaan dan pengetahuan pemasaran produk pangan dengan E-writing menggunakan WhatsApp Group. Kegiatan ini melibatkan anggota Paguyuban Kawargian Adat di area Objek Wisata Budaya Ciung Wanara yang berjumlah 9 orang perwakilan pedagang Warung Kios. Peserta kegiatan diberikan pelatihan pemasaran produk pangan dan penulisan Bahasa Inggris secara elektronik (E-writing) melalui WhatsApp Group. Kegiatan pelatihan menggunakan tekhnik penyuluhan,diskusi kelompok terfokus dan dokumen tangkap layar WhatsApp Group menjadi sumber data. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan Paguyuban Kawargian Adat untuk pemasaran produk pangan mencapai nilaii rata-rata 3,8 dari keseluruhan 5 soal yang diberikan sehingga nilai ketuntasannya adalah 76%. Sedangkan pengetahuan E-writing Slogan Iklan Bahasa Inggris mencapai nilai rata-rata 4,9 dari keseluruahn 5 soal yang diberikan sehingga nilai ketuntasannya adalah 98%. Keterampilan menulis Bahasa Inggris secara elektronikmeliputi tataran kata, frase, dan kalimat yang membentuk slogan iklan untuk memasarkan produk pangan. Melalui diskusi kelompok terfokus dapat diketahui bahwa pelatihan dan pembelajaran menggunakan WhatsApp Group berdampak terhadap pemerolehan pengetahuan dan keberdayaan masyarakat Paguyuban Kawargian Adat karena kemudahan dan efektifitasnya.
