Abstract

Gunung Sigogor Nature Reserve is a conservation forest administratively located in Ngebel District, Ponorogo Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The dragonfly and damselfly community structure, which includes diversity, abundance, evenness and dominance, can be used as an early indicator of changes in environmental conditions, especially in aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to determine dragonfly and damselfly’s community structure, diversity, evenness, dominance, and habitat preference. This study uses the Visual Encounter Survey (VES) observation and transect methods. This method is carried out by tracing all predetermined observation stations by recording the diversity of dragonfly species and counting the number of individuals. The study conducted in the Gunung Sigogor Nature Reserve area showed 15 species from 8 families consisting of 9 species of Suborder Anisoptera and six species of Suborder Zygoptera. In the results, the highest diversity index value was in the Small Stream (S3) with H'= 1.84. The evenness index, Goa Jepang Stream (S5), has the highest value with a value of E=0.9, and the dominance index of Watu Bandar Stream (S6) location has the highest value with a value of C=1.

Abstract

Gunung Picis and Gunung Sigogor nature reserves, located in the Wilis mountain range of East Java, were established in 1924 and 1936, respectively. These areas are critical for biodiversity preservation as mandated by Indonesia's Law No. 5 of 1990 on Conservation of Biological Resources and Ecosystems. Despite previous surveys documenting various mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians data remain limited. Herpetofauna, particularly amphibians, are vital bio-indicators due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, but they face significant threats from habitat loss and exploitation. This study, conducted in November 2020 using Visual Encounter Surveys and opportunistic searches, aimed to catalog herpetofauna diversity in these reserves. The survey identified 29 herpetofauna species, with Nyctixalus margaritifer rediscovered at a new site. Most species were classified as Least Concern (LC), except for the Gonocephalus kuhlii (Vulnerable/VU), indicating potential habitat threats. Analysis of species distribution highlighted "Wates stream" as the most diverse habitat. These findings provide a critical foundation for future conservation efforts, emphasizing the need for targeted strategies to protect amphibian and reptile species in Gunung Picis and Gunung Sigogor nature reserve.

Abstract

Morphological variations in species with a relatively broad distribution, including the genus Tytthosincus, were likely a result of island isolation. This research was conducted to map the morphological variations of the genus Tytthoscincus in Indonesia. A total of 32 specimens of the Tytthoscincus scientific collection in the Zoologicum Bogoriense Museum (MZB) - National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and identified as T. temmincki, T. textus, and T. parvus have been examined and data collection which includes six morphometric characters and 12 meristic characters. Morphometric data were analyzed in univariate and multivariate. Univariate analysis was carried out by the Kruskal-Wallis test, while multivariate analysis was done with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) test. The results showed morphology in T. temmincki and T. textus, namely the number of loreal scales and tympanum diameter. Both T. temmincki and T. textus consist of two groups, but the morphological variation in T. temmincki and T. textus in this study has yet to provide certainty as a different species. However, one was T. textus Type 2, isolated from other species on Jampea Island, Sulawesi. Further research was needed to clarify the taxonomic status of these variations by increasing the number of adequate samples supported by the molecular analysis approach. Keywords: meristic, morphometric, species, Tytthoscincus, variation.
