Abstract

Stunting is a common issue in the global network. Stunting is one of the fundamental problems that hinder the development of toddlers in the world today and has received great international attention, at least in the last decade. In 2017, for example, around 150.8 million (22.2%) children in the world were stunted. The stunting prevalence data collected by WHO (2005-2017) puts Indonesia in third position, the country with the highest prevalence in the Southeast Asia region (36.4%). Basic health research data in 2018 shows the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is around 30.8% and is still below the world standard (WHO), which is a maximum of 20%. Many interventions have been carried out to reduce the prevalence of stunting, especially from a (specific) health aspect. However, interventions that only target specific interventions are still ineffective, hence the need for interventions that involve various sectors or stakeholders. The argument from this study is the need for stunting prevention interventions that involve multi-sectors, not only specific ones (health), but also sensitive interventions (Population, Family Planning, and Family Development programs). Strengthened by the latest research shows the focus of studies on multi-sector stunting prevention. Recent studies also prove that it is important to pay attention to a family-based approach (family development) in the prevention of stunting, especially in regards to birth interval management which has an effect on reducing the prevalence of stunting.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure the increase in maternal attitudes towards maternal and child health as a result of maternity mentoring program. Using quasi-experimental design, this study evaluated changes in attitudes of 280 pregnant women in the intervention and control groups in seven districts/cities in Indonesia. Intervention was one-on-one mentoring program to pregnant women by midwifery students and cadres. Results of the regression analysis showed that the scores of mothers' attitudes in each group were significantly different. The average score of maternal attitudes after mentoring increased by 5.7% in the intervention group (p = 0.000), and increased by 3.8% in the control group (p = 0.000). However, when comparing between the intervention and the control group, the difference in the mothers’ attitudes before and after mentoring was not significantly different (p = 0.655). Thus, maternal mentoring by students can be an alternative tool of education for pregnant women, and hopefully can be conducted sustainably by involving cross-sectoral coordination.

Abstract

Abstract Background: Reducing the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is a priority target for the Indonesian government. The intervention research on the model of mentoring pregnant women by students is expected to encourage increased knowledge of pregnant women and the utilization of maternal and child health services. Objectives: this study aims to explore and analyze the role of social support as one of the important factors that support the success and acceptance of students’ mentoring program. Methods: Mentoring research was carried out in 2018 in 7 districts/cities of mentoring locus areas in Indonesia. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and qualitative informants were selected purposively. Results: Social support from students and cadres is complementary in the process of mentoring pregnant women, support from husbands and families also plays a role in accepting student assistance programs for pregnant women. While the support from health workers, such midwives, both primary healthcare midwives and village midwives, is still very limited and has not been felt in this mentoring activity, there are still good opportunities for further improvement. The form of support given to pregnant women is in the form of knowledge, moral support, appropriate decision support from the family, and support for quality health care practices in antenatal care, delivery, and post-partum (postpartum). Conclusion: Social support in assisting pregnant women can be found from various actors and in various forms of support and is expected to contribute and support improving the quality of services for pregnant women   Keywords: mentoring pregnant women, program evaluation, social support, health intervention     Abstrak Latar Belakang: Penurunan Angka Kematian Ibu (AKI) menjadi target prioritas pemerintah Indonesia.
