Abstract

This paper presents sizing approaches to improve output torque performance in PM motor when partial stator body is removed. As the output torque performance is directly proportional to the electric loading, Q, modification on stator geometry affects the output torque performance and special procedures have to be taken to restore the desired output torque capability. Influences of split ratio, tooth body width, airgap and magnet thickness of  magnet in PM motor with asymmetry stator design are carried out and the performance verification are referred to the back-emf, average output torque, torque ripple as well as cogging torque. From the investigation using 2D-Finite Element Analysis, optimum size of tooth body width and optimum number of coil turns result better output torque while other sizing approaches result no significant change as quick saturation took place.

Abstract

This article presents the simple basic sizing approaches to decrease overall weight of motor and improve magnetic characteristics in PM motor. A review on various stator design in PM motor i.e. radial-flux or axial-flux with slotted or non-slotted is presented. As magnetic and electric loading influence the electromagnetic motor performance, modification on stator body are included in investigation for a desired electromagnetic torque performance. Influences of tooth body width sizing and additional stator slots sizing in PM motor equip with hemicycle stator design are carried out. Two designs are included, both having similar semi-circle stator but different in additional slot tooth within and over 180 ○ i.e. Design 2 and 3 respectively. For optimization using 2D-Finite Element Analysis, optimal tooth body sizing and additional stator tooth result the weight significantly reduce by 44%, 5.9 Nm output torque and 30% torque ripple.

Abstract

PM machines in which slot number and pole number combination differs by one have to be configured with asymmetric winding pattern in order to maximize it back-emf performance. However, this asymmetric winding configuration inherently results an unwanted Unabalanced Magnetic Force (UMF). Investigations of electromagnetic performance of fractional-slot asymmetric winding PM machines using 2-D Finite-Element Analysis are presented. The investigations are mainly driven by the effort of minimizing the UMF. By employing techniques such as non-uniform number of coil turns in every tooth and asymmetric design of stator tooth, the UMF are expected can be minimized. The investigations show that the radial component of UMF has greater effect than the tangential component on the UMF itself. In all proposed techniques, a slight reduction of machine torque performance is inevitable.

Abstract

Permanent Magnet (PM) machines are favorable as an alternative to other machine topologies due to simpler construction and high torque density. However, it may result hight torque ripple due to an influence of cogging torque and electronic commutation. In this paper, comparisons of phase back-emf, static torque and cogging torque due to influence of tooth-tip asymmetry in 12-slot/10-pole double-layer and 12-slot/10-pole single layer winding machines are carried out using 2D Finite-Element Analysis. At rated condition, the stator asymmetry has great influence on the torque performance as there is significant reduction of torque ripple in 12-slot/10-pole mahine equipped with single layer winding than one equipped with double layer winding machine. It si confirmed that an optimum torque performance is desirable via stator iron modification in PM machines.

Abstract

A typical problem of traditional DTCs is that the stator flux fails to regulate at low running speeds. The regulation of stator flux in DTC is disrupted because of the unavoidable voltage drop across the stator resistance. As a result, one of the solutions to the problem is to use a fixed sector rotation technique. The concept is based on decreasing stator flux droop, a simple technique for changing the flux locus sector at a certain angle. This method, however, is only effective at low working speeds at one value of torque. As a result, the stator flux droop effect at various speeds as well as torque must be studied. The study is carried out in this paper using simulation (MATLAB/Simulink) and a practical setup (dSPACE board) where both have performed similar outcomes. The comparison is done between the conventional method (without a strategy) and the proposed method (with strategy). In summary, the effect of stator flux droop has been found to have an inverse linear relationship to the speed and torque variation.

Abstract

A micro-grid is a part of power system which able to operates in grid or islanding mode. The most important variable that able to give us information about the stability in islanded micro-grid network is the frequency dynamical responses. The frequency analysis for multi-area micro-grid network model may involve a complicated of mathematical equations. This makes the researcher intending to omit several unnecessary parameters in order to simplify the equations. The purpose of this paper is to show an approach to derive the mathematical equations to represent the average behavior of frequency dynamical responses for two different micro-grid areas. Both of networks are assumed to have non-identical distributed generator behavior with different parameters. The prime mover and speed governor systems are augmented with the general swing equation. The tie line model and the information of rotor angle was considered. Then, in the last section, the comparison between this technique with the conventional approach using centre of inertia (COI) technique was defined.

Abstract

An isolated electrical network with an independent local distributed generator is very sensitive towards the contingencies between load demand and supply. Although the network system has less complexity in term of structure, its stability condition is crucial due to its stand-alone operating condition. The total power deficit in the network gives the important information related to the dynamical frequency responses which may directly affect the system’s stability level. In this paper, the approach to estimate the total power deficiency for the isolated electrical network was presented by utilized the Luenberger observer method. Although the power deficit is not the state variable in the network mathematical model, the solution of estimation problem was feasible by introducing the new variable using additional dummy system. The simulation was carried out by using MATLAB/Simulink environment and the designed estimator was verified using multifarious load demand changes. The results show that the estimated signal was successfully tracked the expected actual signal with minimum error.
