Abstract

Ensiling is a method of preserving moist forage based on natural fermentation where lactic acid bacteria (LAB) ferment water soluble carbohydrate into organic acids mainly lactic acid under anaerobic condition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of king grass (Pennisetum purpureophoides) ensiled with addition of LAB prepared from fermented grass extract (LBFG). Four treatment were (G0) king grass without additive; (G1) king grass with 2% (v/w) of LBFG; (G2) king grass with 3% (v/w) of LBFG; (G3) king grass with 4% (v/w) of LBFG. Ensiling was conducted in bottle silos of 225 g capacity at room temperatures (27.0 ± 0.20C) for 30 days. The results showed that crude protein content in silage G1, G2 and G3 were relatively higher than that in silage G0. The pH value, butyric acid, total VFA and NH3-N concentrations decreased linearly with increasing level of LBFG addition, while lactic acid concentration increased linearly with LBFG addition. It was concluded that addition of 3% (v/w) of LBFG resulting a better fermentation quality of king grass silage than 2% and 4% (v/w) of LBFG. Key words: Silage, Lactic Acid, Fermentation, King Grass

Abstract

Methane (CH4) is produced as a result of anaerobic fermentation of the soluble and structural carbohydrates by methanogens in the rumen of ruminant animals, which is released into the environment by eructation. Methane production from ruminant range from 2 to 12% of the gross energy intake and represents a substantial loss in efficiency of animal production. Recently, CH4 production by ruminants has also received attention due to its contribution to global warming. Much research has been carried out on the manipulation of rumen fermentation to inhibit methanogenesis. Several strategies can be treated to reduce CH4 production in the rumen such as by feed manipulation (composition, feeding level) or by the use of both chemical and natural feed additives. More biotechnological interventions e.g., defaunation, probiotics and prebiotics, and introduction of reductive acetogenesis in the rumen, are also mentioned. Chemical inhibitors have proved to be effective in decreasing CH4 production to variying degrees. Problems with chemical inhibitors have been noted, such as rumen microbial adaptation, toxicity to the host, residues in endible products and an inability to increase energetic efficiency.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan Program Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) adalah untuk memperkenalkan teknologi pembuatan pakan komplit blok berbasis limbah pertanian, pekebuanan dan industri pangan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan selama 8 bulan (Maret-Oktober 2018) di Kampung Aimasi dan Kampung Udapi Hilir, Distrik Prafi, Kabupaten Manokwari. Dua kelompok petrnak yang menjadi mitra kegiatan adalah Kelompok Harapan Makmur dan Kelompok Tani Ternak Terpadu 11. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa peserta kegiatan mempunyai respon yang baik terhadap materi yang diberikan. Ternak sapi dan kambing mempunyai preferensi yang baik terhadap pakan komplit blok yang diberikan. Kata kunci : pakan komplit blok, jerami padi, limbah, pelepah kelapa sawit, peternak

Abstract

The aim of community service was to introduce the technique of making ammoniated rice straw for farmermembers of Harapan Makmur and Tani Ternak Terpadu Sebelas groups. The activity was conducted during8 months (March to October 2015) at Prafi Districk, Manokwari Regency. The activities of communityservice consisted of introduce the technique of making ammoniated rice straw, demonstration and practice ofmaking ammoniated rice straw. Materials of ammoniated rice straw comprised rice straw, urea and water.The mixture of that materials was stored in polybag for 35 days. Farmer of both groups were very interestedin the topic of making ammoniated rice straw. The process rice straw by applying urea (ammoniation)increased crude protein content by 86.7% dan decreased crude fiber by 10.1%.
