Abstract

Tourism is one of the government’s ways of promoting the country’s identity and improving its economic growth. For tourists, it is to find not only reliable information but also promotion and the existence of the website is effective to persuade the potential tourists. The presence of nature’s beauty is an overwhelming source of curiosity for visitors. The popularity of Indonesian tourism has motivated scholars to research tourism discourse strategies, yet the study on how nature was represented on the tourism website is still scarce. By applying Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper attempts at (re)evaluating language attitudes of the ecolexicon on the Indonesian tourism website. The research problems are formulated to answer (1) what domains of the environment are presented on the website, (2) how the ecolexicon found is evaluated, and (3) how the environment should be described on the website. The data were taken from 16 destination texts accessed from www.indonesia.travel. This research found that the physical environment comprising various domains dominated the website in the form of appreciation. The domination of valuation on the website revealed that Indonesian nature was promoted in terms of its value. It persuaded potential tourists to adore the beauty of the Indonesian physical environment. The website was re-evaluated to promote not only the physical environment but also social and economic environments in the form of judgment. The absence of judgment needs to be considered by the government considering that tourism should be a good chance to teach people how to respect nature despite people’s excitement when visiting the tourism destinations.

Abstract

This paper reports the appraisal analysis - particularly the attitudinal language - of Indonesian flora and fauna discourse on the official website of Indonesian tourism by examining 11 articles, accessed on www.Indonesia.travel. This paper qualitatively identifies the appraised features denoting Indonesian flora and fauna discourse and examined their appraising resources by applying Martin & White’s (2005) framework. Through the lens of interpersonal meaning, this paper criticizes how the website communicates through flora & fauna discourse in tourism to global readers. Findings reveal that affect, judgement, and appreciation function in several ways: introduce Indonesian endangered and endemic species, present the government’s seriousness to preserve the species, and promote the happiness and satisfaction tourists can feel when visiting the sites. From an ecolinguistics point of view, the website presents a beneficial discourse since it does not focus on feelings the tourists may have but the appreciation of the natural phenomena.

Abstract

Transboundary haze has gained critical attention from global scholars since its impacts on society, economics, and health are prevalent in mass media. This study aims to examine transboundary haze from an ecolinguistic viewpoint of Indonesian and Malaysian mainstream media. From the data collected, this study; 1) analyses the themes of transboundary haze news in Indonesian and Malaysian media and 2) interprets the themes represented in the discourse ecologically. Using corpus analytical tools provided by Sketch Engine, this study examined the corpuss keywords, collocations, and concordances. Findings show that, despite some identical themes, Indonesian mass media foreground the fires location, mitigation action, and non-human species impacted by the haze. In contrast, Malaysian mass media focuses on the affected areas and health issues. Both media involved similar strategies to frame the government as the responsible agent for mitigating the fires and haze. Ecologically, the discourse of transboundary haze in Indonesian and Malaysian mass media is ambivalent. In Indonesian media, transboundary haze is regarded as a disaster rather than a conflict due to human activities related to land clearings, whereas Malaysian media captures transboundary haze as a health and pollution issue. The ambivalent discourse is proven by the lack of human activities that cause transboundary haze, even though the media advocates for environmental and health issues as prevalent themes in news broadcasts. Ecologically, this study recommends mass media to emphasise the anthropocentric causes of transboundary haze to raise public awareness about human activities and their environmental consequences.
