Abstract

This article presents the findings of sentence characters in article introductions written by Indonesian authors in Applied Linguistics published in national accredited and international reputable journals. This study aimed to identify sentence characters in article introductions used by Indonesian authors in Applied Linguistics published in national accredited journals and reputable international journals. The method employed in this study was a mixed-method to describe and compare the data. This study’s total number of articles was forty from eight different journals. The results indicated that the average sentence lengths in terms of words number per sentence in the international reputable journals articles were 22.38 words, and those in national accredited journals articles were 21.84 words. Also, the results revealed that the most commonly used sentence pattern in both groups of articles was complex sentences, with 414 sentences in national journals and 378 in international journals. It is followed by simple, compound-complex, and compound sentences. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Indonesian authors from both groups prefer to use long words and use complex sentences more often than the other sentence patterns. Hence, there is no important difference in sentence characters between national accredited and international reputable journals.

Abstract

In 21 Century, ICT is the current issue in English language teaching. After Covid 19 spreads, online learning has been carried out by the government to be carried out. However, as in many developing countries, ICT tools are provided to teachers without considering their attitudes toward ICT.  The study was focus to reveal Junior High School English teachers’ attitudes toward ICT in education. The present study used adopted questionnaire to collect the data which consist of 15 items. Both descriptive statistical method was utilized for data analysis collected from the participants. The results show that Junior high school teachers have positive attitudes toward ICT and although teachers’ attitudes toward ICT do not differ regarding gender and computer experience. It is hoped that the outcomes of this study can be used in shaping innovational practices in the Rejang Lebong Educational System. Pada abad ke-21, TIK adalah isu terkini dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Setelah covid 19 merebak, pembelajaran secara daring telah dianjurakan oleh pemerintah untuk dilaksanakan. Namun, seperti di banyak negara berkembang, alat TIK disediakan tanpa mempertimbangkan sikap guru terhadap TIK. Kajian ini difokuskan untuk mengungkap sikap guru Bahasa Inggris SMP terhadap penggunaan TIK dalam pendidikan. Penelitian ini menggunakan angket yang sudah diadopsi untuk mengumpulkan data yang terdiri dari 15 item. Metode statistik deskriptif digunakan untuk analisis data yang dikumpulkan dari para peserta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru sekolah menengah pertama memiliki sikap positif terhadap TIK dan sikap guru terhadap TIK tidak berbeda berdasarkan jenis kelamin dan pengalaman menggunakan komputer. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan dalam membentuk praktik inovasi dalam Sistem Pendidikan Rejang Lebong.

Abstract

This article analyzes the flouting types of maxim in classroom interaction videos on YouTube. The aims of this study are to find out the flouting types of maxim and also the gender representation of it. Descriptive qualitative method was used. The corpus of the study were 10 classroom interaction videos that were taken from YouTube. Grice’s theory was used to find and analyze the flouting types of maxim found in the video, those are; maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. The result showed that those four types of flouting maxim were found in the classroom interaction videos on YouTube. The highest flouting maxims found were maxim of quantity, relevance and manner and the least one is maxim of quality. This is probably because the speaker wants to build trust and cheer the hearer. The findings of the second research question shows that male was the most dominant gender flouting the maxims. Based on the results and limitation of the study, it is recommended for further research to take the data directly to schools to compare videos taken from YouTube and those taken directly from schools.

Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating students’ perceptions of using PowerPoint as a learning medium in English language teaching at a junior high school. The study was carried out at SMPN 1 Kepahiang with 30 students in the seventh grade as the subject of the study. This study combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine students’ perceptions of using PowerPoint as a learning medium in English language teaching. The data was analyzed through quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (interview) methods. The results showed that students had positive perceptions of using PowerPoint as a teaching medium in learning English at school and were able to improve and motivate themselves. The interviews' conclusions were confirmed by the interview results, which showed that more students approved of using PowerPoint for learning. Thus, it may be said that students have positive and joyful perceptions of PowerPoint. Additionally, students believe PowerPoint to be more beneficial while learning English, particularly when it comes to boosting English activity, motivation, and competency during the learning process. Future researchers are advised to employ a larger sample, a longer time, and to utilize a PowerPoint presentation that is more appealing and varied, such as one created using Canva or another tool.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to described the students’ perception in using YouTube to improve young learners’ vocabulary viewed Islamic English content. The sample of this research were fourth- grade students at Islamic elementary school of IQRA 2. In this study, a quantitative approach was used with a descriptive research design. The data were gathered by using a closed-ended questionnaire, the researchers in this study gathered data on what are students what are students’ perception in using YouTube to improve young learners’ vocabulary viewed Islamic English content. Furthermore, the descriptive statistics were used to analyzed the data, and the results were presented and explained in tables. The finding showed the most students strongly agree with the statement, the use of YouTube improved students’ vocabulary viewed Islamic English content. In conclusion, Students given the positive perceptions towards the use of YouTube improved students’ English vocabulary in teaching and learning process. Abstract

This research aims to determine the perceptions of EFL students regarding using the iPusnas application to find English language resources and determine the level of utilization of the iPusnas application as a reference for academic writing. To achieve the objectives of this study, 34 students majoring in English at the Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu State Islamic University were selected as the research sample. The questionnaire instrument was used to collect data in this study. A total of 22 questions were divided into 12 questions for the variable perception of using iPusnas to find English sources based on three aspects of perception: cognition, affection, and conation. On the other hand, 10 other questions are to find out the use of the iPusnas application as a reference source for academic writing, which consists of 6 indicators based on The Big 6 theory (Process of Solving Information Problems). Then the data obtained were analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach with the tabulation stage and data analysis using the Likert scale technique. Furthermore, based on the data processing analysis findings, this study's results indicate that perceptions of using the iPusnas application to search for English sources rank very well with an interval scale of 3.72 (Very Good). The results of using the iPusnas application as a reference in academic writing also scored well on a scale of 3.19 (Good), indicating a high frequency of using the iPusnas application as a reference for academic writing with a score of 41 (60%). In conclusion, in this study, researchers advise students to increase the use of the iPusnas application, especially in academic writing, such as accessing the application more often to use it as a source of knowledge and not having to wait when there is a new academic writing assignment to access iPusnas.
