Abstract

Despite the emergence of Dogme ELT in the 2000s, only small numbers of academic research employing this approach were documented, especially in the context of teaching English Speaking skills in Indonesian higher education. Also, as a response to Indonesian students’ unsatisfied performance in English skills, this study was aimed to introduce and propose an instructional framework using "Snapshot" for college students. As one of the Dogme ELT activities, it hopefully can boost students' motivation, participation, and ability to use the target language orally. Following the scoping study method by Arksey and O’Malley (2005), we gathered data by deriving and concluding theories and practices of research published in 2016 until 2020. As a result, there are thirteen studies on Dogme ELT. From those studies found, we derived and cultivated the implementation of the approach, the perspectives of teachers and students toward the activities, and then presented the proposed framework in teaching English speaking using Snapshot in three stages. Furthermore, the findings indicate that only five out of thirteen studies that empirically utilized and described Dogme ELT in the classroom with mostly favored by both teachers and students. In sum, the proposed framework hopefully can benefit educators in general, ELT teachers, and lecturers in particular.

Writing has become a challenging skill for EFL or ESL students to overcome. It is not only required the ability to compose a good writing but also a deep layer known as the grammatical aspect. Understanding grammar is very important for building good sentences. Hence, this study aims to find out the most grammatical error found in students’ corpuses and classify the students’ error. To generate this purpose, the researcher explored the grammatical mistakes made with the aid of using college students at the first semester of Pontianak State Polytechnic as the sample of research. This study was conducted using descriptive research using students’ corpus as the data collection. The results of this study discovered that the addition error is the most frequent type of error made based on the frequency on the percentage that was 39,02%. Furthermore, this kind of error is classified as substantial. As for the other types of errors made by students, namely mis formation with the total of errors as 35.36%, omission of error as 23.17% and error in disordering as 2.44%. It can be concluded that the students made errors due to their background of knowledge and their lack of understanding of English structure.

Abstract

Speech is the primary means by which humans communicate with each other. When we listen to someone speaking we generally focus on understanding their meaning. We are trying to interpret what does the speaker want to tell us by generating the ideas of the language she/he produces. Since the language is series of sound that has meaning, the perception of speech involves the recognition of patterns in the acoustic signal in both time and frequency. It is much easier to get the meaning of a conversation if both the speaker and the listener has same language. But, if both of them has different language it will take time to get the clear meaning of a conversation. This paper is trying to examine the basic issues in speech perception that human beings face everyday consciously or unconsciously.
