Abstract

This article elucidates two main points. First, the difference between da’wah (Islamic preaching) activities and scientific-positivistic works. Da’wah, for example, is a theological work. To preach is to Invite/to call people to strengthen their beliefs and faith, do good, avoid bad deeds, and in many cases, preaching is to make judgments: right and wrong, misguidance or faith. Conversely, positivistic-scientific work is a scientific activity with methodological tools: there is empirical data (primary and secondary), there are approaches and theories, there are logical and rational explanations, and instead to strengthen belief and faith, scientific work is to find “scientific truth”. There are ontological, epistemological and objective differences between da’wah activities and scientific-positivistic ways. Second, to this day there is still a big problem related to Indonesian State Islamic University or Indonesian State Islamic Institute (UIN/IAIN): is this institution is a da’wah institution because there is an “Islam” within, or a scientific educational institution one because it is also a university that demands a scientific-positivistic ways. This article uses historical, theological and philosophical approaches.

Abstract

The creation of the universe is an active area of research in modern cosmological science. Discussions about the creation of the universe are endlessly debated. The rapid development of science has led to the belief that many of the world's problems can be solved and answered by science, consequently reducing the active role of religion in everyday life. In reality, the encounter between science and religion generates a range of views, from conflict to integration. This research aims to deeply examine the views of an atheism figure, Stephen Hawking, who rejects the existence of God. This study is conducted from a psychological perspective and personal life, with a primary emphasis on scientific views related to cosmological studies. This research is a library study, using a qualitative methodological approach and the disciplinary approaches of scientific, theological, and philosophical studies. The primary data sources used are the books authored by Stephen Hawking.

Abstract

This article elucidates several theories of scripture to view the Quran as the word of God and as a holy book responded by its readers. By reading scripture, oral and aural, inspirational, deductive and inductive theories, this article has found out that the Quran enters most of these theories. If Smith proposes the theory that scripture is a human activity, then the Quran is one of the most widely received scriptures in the form of various interpretations that greatly influences the emergence of Muslim religious practices. Smith even called the Quran a holy book par excellent. Scripture theories that were born in the context of Christian theology turned out to provide surprising evidence that the holy book in Christianity and Islam had several things in common: similar in terms of revelation, although in different forms, similar in terms of responding to the holy book, and similar in that the holy book had a strong influence on its adherents.

Abstract

This paper will explain the importance of pluralism, or at least to appreciate inclusivism as understanding and practice of interfaith relations in the global era. Today, to be exclusive or to isolate ourselves in religious views is no longer relevant. Adopting pluralism or inclusivism as religious understanding can be a good theological capital for the enforcing inter-faith dialogues and cooperation, ethical and humanitarian cooperation. Keywords: Exclusive, inclusive, pluralistDOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i1.993

Abstract

Throughout history, valid and representative arguments discussing the unity and oneness (esoteric) of religions have often referred to perennial philosophy or Sophia perennis. Indeed, through this philosophy, plural religions find commonalities and points of convergence while acknowledging their differences. In this article, the author attempts to present other arguments that further affirm the esoteric unity of religions. These arguments include the theory of continuity of revelation and prophecy, the concept of monotheism present in various religions, the understanding of the existence of one God, albeit appearing in many names, and the mystical perspective (Sufism) in Islam, which strongly supports the notion of the unity (esoteric) of religions.

Abstract

This writing presents the concepts of “maqāmāt” and “aḥwāl” in Sufism. “Maqāmāt” refers to the creative spiritual path undertaken by Sufis to approach and encounter God. It (maqāmāt) must be strived for (makāsib) with the entirety of one’s soul and body. True to its name, it is fixed and permanent. On the other hand, “aḥwāl” are the mental and spiritual states experienced by Sufis as a result of “maqāmāt.” It is considered a divine gift (mawāhib), cannot be attained through effort, and is subject to change. However, in the view of some Sufi groups, both are considered gifts.

Abstract

In the Qur’an, the term “futuwwah” refers to “an ideal, noble, and perfect person, one whose hospitality and generosity are endless until they have nothing left for themselves, someone who selflessly gives everything they own, including their own life, for the sake of their companions.” In the perspective of Sufi mystics, futuwwah signifies heroic generosity, praiseworthy conduct following the example of the prophets, saints, sages, companions, and lovers of God. This ideal is perfectly exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Several examples of the tradition of generosity are seen in the character of Prophet Ibrahim, who obediently followed Allah’s command to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah.
