Abstract

The currently ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic induced built-up fear and anxiety notably with non-stop surge information through all media. Understanding of emotional and mental health impact during this state is urgently needed for further intervention. This study aimed to identify the current pattern of depression, anxiety, stress and, emotional disorder presented in the society and the association between Indonesian news-seeking behaviour and their mental health state during the COVID-19 outbreak. A cross-sectional study with 1,508 respondents was carried out with online questionnaire consisted of depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS) and SRQ-20 as assessment tools that was distributed through social media platforms from April 2−June 8, 2020. Data was analyzed using Mann Whitney, Kruskal Wallis, Post Hoc with Bonferroni, and Chi-square test (p<0.05). As much as 20.7% of respondents were depressed, 36.9% had anxiety, 25.5% had been stress, and 27.6% had emotional disorder. Most respondents actively searched about COVID-19 especially through television and social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Type of news and level of trust in COVID-19 news were the factors that influenced emotional and mental health state (p=<0.05). Providing mental health support in a timely and appropriate manner through a hotline team, media, or multidisciplinary team, including mental health professional is an important thing that the Indonesian government must do to help the Indonesian people through this pandemic.

Abstract

Pandemic COVID-19 is a health problem that is spread all over the world including Indonesia. As 4 June 2020, Indonesia has reached 28,818 persons confirmed COVID-19, 1,721 deaths related to COVID-19 and 8.892 patients have recovered from the disease. The amount of response and attention of the public regarding the COVID-19 case in Indonesia and the circulation of information in the community became the basis of interest in identifying and analyzing demography factors with general knowledge on COVID-19. Participants were 1,254 collected through online questionnaire distributed on social media platform, from February 5, 2020 to June 6, 2020. Data analyzed used Chi square test with significant <0.05. The result showed that majority of respondents have good general knowledge about COVID-19 and the personal prevention towards the disease (>75%). Nonetheless, most misinformation was that COVID-19 killed everyone contracted to it, came from a biological weapon laboratory, and that covering mouth and nose with bare hand is considered as correct coughing ethic. Characteristics that showed statistical significances were education, occupation, and educational/occupational background. Although Indonesian governments already give the best effort to educate the public to stop the transmission, an extensive educational health campaign should be done to raise awareness in public about preventive knowledge and behavior of COVID-19.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 became world health problem because of its rapid transmission among humans. Cause of that, Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia negated class at school and changed it to online class at home. But for some courses like communication, the students must communicate directly to the interlocutor. An online-based health communication learning model is required so that health communication learning continues to run optimally. This study aims to evaluate the new ways of learning health communication through reading journals and delivered in various media.Case study: The communication courses begin with a journal reading task based on predetermined Topics. This task is done in groups, and consists of 5 to 6 peoples. Then, the journal must be submitted in various educational media such as slide presentations, posters, or videos (participants are free to choose the media used) and will be presented via live Instagram or Zoom. Evaluation of this task was conducted to analyze the skills of communication and was assessed by their seniors in medical profession students of Sriwijaya University (peer review). The students was also give feedback (voluntarily) through the questionnaire on this task. Total of 40 presentations and educational media has been evaluated. Most of the students choose poster as their media promotion. The scoring is closed to balance, 55% enough and 45% good (discussion). Connection failure (60.63%) was the main problem that arise when they present the task.Conclusion: Students skill for making media promotion as they props for present the journal was good. The report and presentation of this task was satisfying. The students feel to have the effect of increasing their ability and personal knowledge on health communication. This task was effective for medical students to learn about health communication.
