Abstract

This article investigates ‘Â’isyah RA’s corrective interventions toward the narrations of other Companions within the corpus of Prophetic hadîts. While classical and contemporary scholarship has long acknowledged ‘Â’isyah’s role in correcting transmitted reports, existing studies have largely approached this phenomenon descriptively and have rarely examined the linguistic and pragmatic structure of her corrective discourse. Employing a qualitative pragmatic approach, this study analyzes a selected corpus of hadîts from Shahîh al-Bukhârî and Shahîh Muslim in which ‘Â’isyah RA explicitly disputes or clarifies reported narrations. The analysis draws on speech act theory as an analytical framework to identify patterns of corrective discourse, focusing on assertive, directive, and expressive acts and the linguistic markers through which they are realized, such as negation structures, evaluative verbs, and expressive formulas. Rather than treating these interventions solely as juridical or theological statements, the study interprets them as context-bound communicative acts within early hadîts transmission. The findings suggest that ‘آ’isyah’s corrective responses function as discursive mechanisms for negotiating epistemic authority at the level of narration, grounded in proximity to the Prophet and experiential knowledge. By integrating pragmatic speech act analysis with the conventions of hadîts scholarship, this study proposes a linguistic framework for examining corrective discourse in early hadîts transmission. It contributes to a more systematic understanding of how epistemic authority was negotiated within early narrational interaction.

Abstract

This article examines the phases of human creation in the Qur'an through Ferdinand de Saussure's structural linguistic framework, with particular attention to paradigmatic (lexical selection) and syntagmatic (sequential arrangement) relations operative in key verses: QS al-Mu'minūn [23]:12–14, al-Ḥajj [22]:5, as-Sajdah [32]:7–9, and al-Insān [76]:2. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the study draws on primary data comprising Qur'anic texts and secondary data from classical and contemporary exegetical works. The analysis demonstrates that lexical variations, including ṭīn (clay), turāb (soil), sulālah (essence of earth), and nuṭfah (seminal fluid), constitute a system of paradigmatic oppositions that encodes a graduated ontological progression from material origin to spiritual endowment. Syntagmatic relations, realized through conjunctions such as ṡumma and fa, organize these stages into a coherent narrative sequence that moves from physical formation to the bestowal of cognitive and spiritual faculties. Accordingly, the language of the Qur'an functions not merely to describe biological processes but to construct a conceptual framework through which human identity, origin, and existential purpose are discursively represented. This study concludes that the Qur'anic linguistic structure constitutes a theologically organized semiotic system in which lexical selection and syntagmatic patterning jointly produce a layered discourse of human existence — one that integrates the material, biological, spiritual, and cognitive dimensions of personhood within a unified sign system.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of Muslim identity in Zohran Mamdani's political communication in the United States by analyzing how lexical choices shape meaning in multicultural political spaces. Previous studies show that Islamophobia and post-9/11 narratives continue to marginalize Muslim identities, yet little attention is given to how Muslim political figures construct their identities through political communication, highlighting the urgency of this study. The purpose of this research is to explain how lexical choice and narrative structures are used to frame Muslim identity as an equal and legitimate entity. This study uses a qualitative approach, utilizing Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis to understand identity negotiations in political communication discourse, with the concept of hybrid identity as its basis. The methodology involves a three-dimensional analysis: textual level, discursive practices, and social practices. The dataset consisted of five public communication materials including victory speeches, media interviews, and podcast appearances. The findings show that Zohran Mamdani constructs a hybrid Muslim identity through strategic use of linguistic features which reposition Muslims as active moral and political agents. His discourse adapts across communication platforms while maintaining ideological consistency, and actively engages with broader socio-political issues such as Islamophobia, minority representation, and national belonging. These findings contribute to the broader field of critical discourse studies by demonstrating how linguistic strategies are used to negotiate identity, power, and social positioning. This study also offers practical implications for political communication, suggesting that inclusive and strategically constructed discourse can challenge Islamophobic narratives and foster more equitable representation of minority groups.

Abstract

Western orientalist writings on Islam often present selective historical narratives that influence public understanding of Islamic teachings. One of these works is William J. Federer’s What Every American Needs to Know about the Qur’an – A History of Islam and the United States, which portrays Islam, the Qur’an, and the Prophet Muhammad in ways that raise theological and textual concerns. This study aims to analyze how key signifiers, Islam, the Qur’an, and the Prophet Muhammad are associated with signified meanings that deviate from established Islamic interpretations. Using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework and a qualitative descriptive method, this research identifies three major patterns of signified deviation: (1) Islam is linked to coercion and revenge despite Qur’anic principles of religious freedom and forgiveness; (2) the Qur’an is portrayed as legitimizing violence and sexual misconduct through selective readings of specific verses; and (3) the Prophet Muhammad is represented as acting based on personal desire rather than divine command. The study concludes that these deviations result from reassigning signified meanings to key Islamic signifiers, producing an ideologically framed interpretation. This research contributes to understanding how semiotic processes shape contemporary representations of Islam in orientalist discourse.
