Abstract

Despite a long tradition of harvesting nyale in southern coast of Lombok island teacher’s understanding on the animal producing nyale are very low. This study aimed to develop a learning module of nyale worm biology for teachers and students. The developmental research method was adapted from the Borg and Gall model which includes 10 steps. Data on module feasibility were collected through a process of validation of the learning module. Questionnaires on the student’s and teacher’s responses to the learning module were administered to assess module practicability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the feasibility of the subject material was 85.90%, the media feasibility was 81.71%, and the user test was 81.09%. The learning module of nyale worm biology is very valid, effective, and practical as a supporting book for learning biology at high schools

Abstract

The research was carried out with the aim of knowing the effectiveness of the video-assisted scientific approach on students' critical thinking skills. The study used a quasi-experimental method. The research was carried out on high school students in the city of Mataram with a total sample of 323 as the research sample. Data Inferential analysis with Analysis of Covariance (ANACOVA) followed by Least Significance Difference (LSD), was used to test the research hypothesis. The results showed that the learning approach had a significant effect on learning activities with an F hit value of 60.37. The scientific approach is not significantly different from the video-assisted scientific approach, but is significantly different from the conventional approach with a mean value of 62.17 for video-assisted scientific approaches and an average of 64.69 and a conventional approach of 47.48. The video-assisted scientific approach improves students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study examines the use of creative teaching materials in building students' creative thinking skills. The research sample was 53 students of class X one of the public high schools in Mataram. Instruments for learning activities include creative teaching materials modified by the Writing to Teach approach, student books, and data collection instruments. Creative dispositions were measured using closed questionnaires on curious, persistent, imaginative, collaborative, and disciplined aspects. Students' creative thinking skills were measured using a creative thinking skills test in the form of five essay questions on viruses. The results of the study show that the use of creative teaching materials triggers creative dispositions in the five aspects of inquisitive, persistent, imaginative, collaborative, and disciplined aspects, and also improves creative thinking skills where the average score of classes using creative teaching materials is higher than the average score in classes using books student package. Students' creative thinking skills improve in all aspects of creative thinking skills (flexibility, fluency, elaboration, and originality). This shows that the use of creative teaching materials provides better conditions for the development of student's creative thinking skills.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of ethanol extract of banana peel ketip (Musa paradisiaca Forma Typiaca) on sperm concentration and motility of mice (Mus musculus) following cigarette smoke exposure. This study aims to determine the phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity of the extract after cigarette smoke exposure. This study began with extracting chemical compounds from the sample, followed by phytochemical screening to determine their content. The antioxidant capacity of the extract was examined using the DPPH method with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and an in vivo test using adult male mice. Sperm concentration and motility data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test. The phytochemical screening results showed that the ketip banana peel ethanol extract contains terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. The DPPH test results showed that the IC50 value of the extract was 554.84 ppm. Statistical analysis of the in vivo data showed that the ethanol extract of ketip banana peel significantly increases sperm concentration (p value = 0.005486; F value 4.197422; F critical= 2.510158) and motility (P value= 0.0000; F value =41.59092; F critical= 2.510158) following cigarette smoke exposure. Tukey’s HSD analysis of sperm concentration (HSD score = 2.271) showed that the 5000 ppm extract significantly increases sperm concentration without cigarette smoke exposure and sperm concentration after 5 minutes of cigarette smoke exposure. Nevertheless, this treatment failed in restoring sperm concentration following 30 minutes of cigarette smoke exposure. This indicates that longer duration of cigarette smoke exposure causes severe damage to sperm production (spermatogenesis) that is difficult to restore, even with high-dose treatment. Tukey’s HSD analysis of sperm motility (HSD score = 0.207) showed that treatment with the ethanol extract of Ketip banana peel alone insignificantly increases sperm motility. The decrease in sperm motility after cigarette smoke exposure was significantly restored with high doses of the peel extract. These findings suggest that the sperm maturation stage, where the sperm motility is determined, was protected by antioxidant substances contained in the ethanol extract of Ketip banana peel.
