Abstract

This study aimed to analyze a model of economic social relationships between slaughter, sawi (women mealtraders in a traditional market) and cattle farmers in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. Another objective was toassessthe causative factors for changing of economic social relationship between of these actors in beeftrading. Data were analyzed using descriptive approaches. The results of the study show that economic-socialrelationships between slaughter, sawiand cattle farmers tended to weaken in the last five years. Loosening ofsocial relations was caused by similarity and familial patterns that had been neglected. These actors were moreprofit-oriented than maintaining of social relationships. The other causative factors were due to the pressure ofoutside competitors with the increasing number and a lot of financial capability. The competitors ofSumbawa’s slaughter were not only the local actors but also slaughter and cattle traders from Lombok whosehad made cattle purchase increased to remote areas in Sumbawa.

Abstract

Initially, goat farmers in the village of Segala Anyar, sub-district of Pujut, district of Central raised goats individually as in the general model of goat farming in rural areas. Then, the goat has been kept in groups since the government introduced the Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goat with a dual purpose in 2012. However, the progression of goat-farmers groups tends to be slow and their existence in supporting goat productivity improvement is less effective. This community service aims to provide knowledge and understanding to goat-farmer groups regarding: organizational development, collaboration, leadership, and communication. In addition, this activity is also directed to provide assistance in designing a model for developing institutional management of local potential livestock resources. It is expected that targeted-goat farmers will have knowledge and understanding about key aspects in strengthening group capacity towards optimizing institutional roles. Problem-solving was identified by a participatory approach by involving goat farmers intensively, especially recognizing their potential and the problems encountered. The extension methods that have been implemented are lectures, interactive-constructive discussions, and preparation of a 'potential-problem analysis' matrix. After in-class, group monitoring and assistance through field visits were carried out routinely and periodically. The results of this community service are goat farmers gain additional knowledge and understanding about important aspects in order to increase the capacity of their group as well as they already have routine activities, such as regular meetings, strengthening awig-awig, and cooperation with other parties (especially the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Mataram) to strengthen their group.

Abstract

The deliverable indicators for the results of the livestock sub-sector in West Nusa Tenggara over the past ten years (2008-2018) are still limited to performance-based measures from a technical standpoint of livestock farming and social welfare. Meanwhile, its performance in forming regional economic structures has yet to be well explored and analyzed. This study aims to analyze the economic performance of the livestock sub-sector in the West Nusa Tenggara economic development for the 2008-2018 period and to project its role in the future as well as to enrich theoretical discussions related to regional macroeconomic issues from an analysis of the role livestock sub-sector in the structure of West Nusa Tenggara regional economy over the last ten years (2008-2018). The results of the LQ analysis showed that the livestock sub-sector was included as the base sector in the regional economy during the 2008-2018 period, referring to the LQ>1 value was 1.31 along with 2 (two) other sub-sectors: food crops (1.49; LQ>1) and fisheries (1.01; LQ>1). The net shift value (Dij) of the livestock sub-sector also showed positive results (+), indicating that the livestock sub-sector was classified as progressive during the 2008-2018 period. Therefore, measures to increase the added value of livestock sub-sector products must continue to be developed by initiating livestock product processing.
