Abstract

The main objective of the research is to find out: (1) whether Drama technique is more effective than Guided Conversation Activity Technique to teach Speaking; (2) whether the students who have high self-actualization have better speaking skill than those who have low self-actualization; and (3) whether there is an interaction between teaching techniques and students’ self-actualization. The method of this research was quantitative research using an experimental design. The research findings are: (1) Drama Technique is significantly different from Guided Conversation Activity (GCA) technique to teach speaking because Fo is higher than Ft. (2) the speaking skill of the students who have high self-actualization is significantly different from that of those who have low self-actualization if viewed from the result of ANOVA because Fo is higher than Ft. (3) there is an interaction between teaching techniques and self-actualization for teaching speaking because Fo is higher than Ft.Keywords: drama, self-actualization, guided conversation, speaking.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to ascertain parents' perceptions of their roles in mapping students' English learning achievement and identifying their involvements and strategies for involvement in students' English learning achievement amid the Covid-19 pandemic at a private junior high school in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. The study is qualitative in nature and employs a case study design. The questionnaire and interview were made public in this study. Additionally, a descriptive model was utilized to examine the data. The findings suggested that parents agreed on their roles and responsibilities in mapping their children's English learning achievement. Certain parents considered their duties and involvement were critical, even more so during the Covid-19 epidemic, during which children spent most of their time at home. Parents believed that supporting, motivating, and directing their children's roles might aid the school and their children's English learning. Additionally, English teachers are expected to act like parents, monitoring, guiding, and acknowledging their students' assignments. Additionally, parents actively participated in school activities like teacher-parent online sessions to interact and discuss their children's academic success during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Many Indonesian English Learners nowadays use  the smartphone as their communication tools. It is used only for socializing through social media by most of them. This descriptive research aims to elaborate their perception on the implementation of MALL in English Class for University Level. The data were collected through a survey questionnaire which was adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The result proves that they have a positive perception on the usage of MALL.

Abstract

Reflective practice has become central issue in teacher professional development. Through reflective practice, it is expected teachers can improve their teaching quality and develop their professionalism as well. As a tool of professional development, reflective practice offers opportunities to teachers to reflect on their teaching. There are some aspects that can be included in teachers’ reflection. This qualitative case study was aimed at investigating some aspects of English teachers reflected in their reflective practice. 4 in-service English teachers were involved as respondents of the study. Data were collected through interview and documentation. Then, they were analyzed by using interactive model analysis for qualitative study. The results of data analysis were elaborated by using narration. There were four major findings emerged as the aspects of teachers’ reflection in their reflective practice; classroom management, teaching strategy, teaching and learning material, and students difficulties in learning

Abstract

Since the development of information technology grows rapidly, the educational institutions are offered various media or tools of instruction supporting and enhancing teaching and learning process. E-textbooks are a variety of technology which changes the experience of classroom language from traditional into paperless in reading classroom. This technology facilitates the teacher and the students to utilize computer and paper-based reading tasks in realizing the functions of the e-learning environment. It creates an atmosphere of independent acquisition and quality pedagogical strategies which can improve the efficiency of teaching and learning. The use of electronic textbook completed by hypertext and multimedia tools clearly demonstrated the advantage of this technology compared with traditional textbooks. This research is about the teacher and students’ views on using e-textbooks for reading in EFL classroom. This research aims to identify, describe, and analyze teacher and students’ perceptions on using e-textbooks technology as the paper textbooks in teaching and learning reading for Indonesian lower secondary school. Mix method of qualitative and quantitative was applied in the research. The research was conducted on an English teacher and the twenty-five eighth-grade students who used e-textbooks in reading classroom of Islamic junior high school in Lampung, Indonesian. The techniques of data collection used were interviews, questionnaires, observation, and documentation. The results showed that the teacher and majority of the students had a good perception of using e-textbooks. Considering insufficiently available textbooks provided by the government which do not meet students’ need and interest, the teacher should find out and develop many other resources for teaching and learning in the classroom. However, e-textbook technology will not displace traditional paper textbooks in the future, but they will become the perfect complement to paper textbooks.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the English teachers’ perception on educational supervision. This research was a qualitative study using purposive sample. The research was conducted in the three senior high schools which had different accreditation in Kalirejo, Lampung. The data were collected from the interview with three English teachers. Each of them represented different school. The data the researcher had included were all about how the English teachers’ perceptions on educational supervision in Kalirejo, Lampung. All the subjects in this research had been supervised before, thus they could describe their perceptions on educational supervision. The result of the research showed that the teachers believed that educational supervision is an ongoing process to observe the way teachers teach in the classroom according to the lesson plan and to improve their teaching skills.

Abstract

To be good a teacher, a teacher must incessantly improve her/his teaching practice and skill/knowledge to produce and keep the academic quality. Mechanically, a teacher requires to concern a particular method/ technique or strategy and use a certain tool/type to fulfill the benchamark of excellence in teaching. Hence, reflection is substantial as one of the indispensable approaches that can be practiced to direct teacher’s performance becomes more experienced. In teaching, the term reflection refers to the opportunity of teachers to think back critically after the teaching-learning process. Previous studies that have been conducted to observe the efficiency of teacher journal in the education field. Conversely, only a few kinds research explored teacher’s perceptions toward the utilization of the teacher’s journal. Likewise, this research was located in Indonesia and engage an in-service EFL teacher of Junior High School to accomplish the gap. It intended at determining the parts reflected from the teacher journal. Moreover, to investigate the research problems, the researcher used an in-depth interview to explore the teacher’s experience in utilizing teacher diary. Consequently, this study employed a qualitative method since it was considered as the appropriate design to accomplish the research. The researcher concluded that the teacher has a positive perceptions related to the teacher’s diary/teacher’s journal. It gives precious involvement for English teachers to be more experienced and professional to help students in mastering English skills and help the teacher to do reflection in order to make a better teaching practice for the next English teaching.

Abstract

The pedagogies of English teaching are rapidly changing due to the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT). According to curriculum 2013, ICT is an essential component that should be integrated into each subject including English. It can be expected that it is essential for the teacher to use ICT in the teaching and learning process in order to help students to achieve a high quality of English subjects. To know the ICT role in the classroom so that this study was conducted to investigate senior high school students’ perceptions toward ICT usage in the EFL classroom. There are two students from the public school participated in Surakarta. This research design was a qualitative method with a case study approach to determine students’ perceptions and their experience in using ICT. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. The result indicated that the students perceived ICT usage and perceived access to ICT. Although the students use ICT and access it in the classroom, the domination of the level is at substitution and augmentation. These two levels are called enhancement. The findings reveal the usage of ICT in the EFL classroom. The students are reflected only to be able to use a basic function in a limited mobile application with only little change and improvement.

Abstract

These days, the development of science and technology achieved has contributed to the advance in language teaching and learning. Nowadays, language teachers utilize computer and internet with their software and facilities for the purpose of teaching and learning activities in the classrooms. The use of computer assisted language learning (CALL) for language teaching and learning is not only at formal school such as elementary school, high school and university, but it is also used at informal school such as Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar (SKB). Therefore, this study aims to investigate teacher’s belief and its implication on integrating CALL in English class at SKB (Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar). For reaching the aims, a qualitative method is conducted towards the participant who has used CALL for language teaching and learning at SKB. The participant is purposively selected in order to get sufficient data of this research. The questionnaire, interview and classroom observation are used for collecting data. The result of this study shows that the teacher has positive belief towards CALL integration in English teaching and learning process. Besides, the participant also implies the CALL integration by explaining materials through Power Point and You Tube, giving quiz and homework through Google form. Thus, the teacher’s beliefs has implicated in the English teaching and learning at Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar and CALL is useful for English teaching and learning process at Sanggar Kegiatan Belajar. http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v21i1.pp57-73

Abstract

This article discusses the strategies used by five non-millennial teachers (aged 54-59 years old) of a junior high school in coping with the online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, in Ngawi, East Java, Indonesia. The teachers were interviewed, and the data were transcribed and analyzed by creating a data repository, expanding the codes, describing the coded data, and drawing conclusions. The results revealed that the teachers had several strategies used, which were to increase students’ interest in learning, provide students with knowledge and attention, create efficient learning resources, and use SIMPEL (Sistem Informasi Manajemen Pembelajaran or Learning Management Information System), which is specifically available only in Ngawi. SIMPEL was specially developed by the Ngawi district education office, to ensure that the learning processes in Ngawi Regency continue to run optimally during the COVID-19 outbreak. SIMPEL substituted the use of online YouTube videos and materials because the materials were already provided by the system, decreasing the need for the teachers to depend on other resources. Despite these teachers also using other online platforms, hence issues such as the slow internet connection, running out of quotas and blackouts, hindered their efforts to use these platforms at times. Hence, WAG was the most used media to conduct their online learning due to its simplicity and availability. These teachers continued to strive to learn digital technologies ever since they changed from their previous face-to-face teaching strategies.
