Abstract

This study aims to learn about students' experiences developing their speaking skills using Online Informal Learning of English (OILE) activities. The researcher gathered data for this narrative study by interviewing and observing three English education students at a State University in Central Java. The data were then evaluated qualitatively. The results indicated that students learned several aspects of speaking and communicating in English using Youtube video content, including pronunciation, intonation, and expressiveness. Additionally, the students used a variety of social media and chat platforms to engage with their international peers in English. Additionally, students favoured this informal learning mechanism because they recognized the efficacy of these online everyday learning activities in pleasantly achieving meaningful learning goals. Additionally, OILE activities aided students' speaking performance during informal learning activities.

Abstract

The practice of learner-centered approach (LCA) in enhancing foreign language teaching-learning process has been broadly recognized. Little research, however, have disclosed how this approach works and promotes learners’ improved abilities. While learner-generated material (LGM) is a principle of and one of the activities in learner-centered approach, it is currently under studied, thus little researchers discuss how it applies in EFL context. This qualitative case study investigated the teacher’s belief and classroom practice of learner-generated material in a flipped speaking class. The participant of the study was a teacher in a vocational high school. The instruments were participant observation, semi-structured interview, and documentation. The analysis showed that the teacher’s belief was mostly consistent with her classroom practices, i.e. beliefs about learning objectives, teaching modeling, and procedure of learner-generated material, teaching resources, classroom management, teacher’s role, students’ role, and assessment. Nevertheless, there were little discrepancies, e.g. teachers’ beliefs about classroom procedure. The present study recommends that teachers, especially those new to LGM, follow the present findings in order to recognize the aspects within LGM in the umbrella of LCA and understand how these methods practices. The implication of the study is this research will give a contribution in Indonesian ELT context by providing a new perspective of learner-centered approach through technology.

Abstract

The present study employed a mixed-method approach to investigate creativity and speaking ability of EFL learners towards its relationship and other essential factors. Indonesian EFL students of the 5th semester taken the course of Academic Speaking in a private university (n=30) who were selected randomly responded Creative Personality Scale (CPS) and Self-Rating of Creativity. For the former, they described themselves by checking off 18 positively scored and 12 negatively scored items which were given a value of +1 and a value of -1, respectively. The latter was assessed by using eight items from the creativity scale. The 7-point Likert-type scales (1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree) were made to respond these items. Following this, the students' monologues based on five themes were scored using the IELTS Speaking Test Descriptor. The data were analyzed using Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, pattern matching, and explanation building. The finding shows a significant correlation between EFL learners' creativity and their speaking ability (? = .961). The students also faced up to the cultural constraints in advancing their creativity. This study should, therefore, be of value to practitioners wishing to provide EFL students with appropriate materials that are addressed to enhance their speaking ability.

Abstract

This article would like to present how women were defined in the movie, both by male and female characters. Mills (1998) provides a tool to help the readers understanding the style of a writer through her choices of words, sentences, and even in the discourse level. A novel based movie which won and was nominated in several awards, The Breadwinner, was full of portrayal of women in the setting of Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. The tragic story was beautifully wrapped under the animated movie produced to show the real picture towards the world. The data are in the form of words, sentences and discourse spoken by male and female characters that represent the depiction of women. The data obtained are examined with the view of Sara Mills theory. It is found that in the movie, the women are represented as two opposing aspects: women representation as an object of man domination,and women as the subject who is able to speak out her mind and to decide independently.

Abstract

Teaching is not only about knowledge, cognition, and skill but also emotional relationships among the students, colleagues, and parents. Particularly for teaching English in rural areas in Indonesia, there are several challenges that should be handled: geographical feature of these area, their culture and the way of life, the quality of both students and teachers, and so on. This research paper investigates teacher emotions experienced by a male EFL teacher in one of rural areas while dealing with those challenges. Teacher emotions are one of significant aspect that could not be left behind in teaching and learning activity. This research will explore comprehensively the distance and closeness felt by the teacher while teaching English there. This qualitative research was conducted using a narrative case study approach. The data were collected from the participant’s journal and interview. Referring to Hargreaves framework, the findings reveal 5 emotional geographies of the participant. This research contributes to Indonesian government as the one that concerns in 3T areas, EFL teachers who have to handle complex situations while teaching, and other researchers who are interested in conducting emotional geographic research.

Abstract

Teaching English in EFL context needs more than the knowledge of subject matter and pedagogical skill but also its emotional side. Teacher emotion is one of necessary aspect that could not be left behind. An EFL teacher who teaches English in 3T areas in Indonesia encountered some challenges such as geographical feature, culture, poor quality of both students and teachers, and so on. This research paper tries to find out teacher emotions experienced by female teacher in one of 3T areas. This research will explore the distance and closeness felt by the teacher while teaching English there. This research was conducted using a narrative case study method. The data were collected from the participant’s journal and interview. Referring to Hargreaves framework, the findings reveal 5 emotional geographies of the participant namely sociocultural, political, moral, spatial, and professional. This research contributes to Indonesian government as the one that concerns in 3T areas. It is also significant data for EFL teachers who have to handle complex situations while teaching in such context.

Abstract

Learners who have studied the English language for several years are still not able to speak English fluently and they can solve the weakness of English teaching at school or university and the need of society to learn English by English course. ―Daffodils‖ English course in Kampung Inggris is acknowledged as an alternative solution for English learners. The objectives of the research are: (1) to investigate why ―Daffodils‖ English course in Kampung Inggris as an alternative solution for English learners (2) to explore the effects of Public Speaking at ―Daffodils‖ English course in Kampung Inggris. This is an ethnography study research. The ethnography study data are collected through document analysis, via in-depth interview (students and teacher), and observation public speaking class. The research findings show that; (1) ―Daffodils‖ English course solves the weakness of English teaching to learn English, (2) the effects of Public Speaking at ―Daffodils‖ English course can develop students’ pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical understanding and language experience and give good contribution for English learners. In conclusion, it can be concluded that public speaking at ―Daffodils‖ English course in Kampung Inggris gives solution for English learners to learn.

Abstract

Abstract. This paper attempts to unfold the phenomena of two different translation versions of culinary terms in film ‘Chef’, namely the subtitle version of ‘Siberian’ and of ‘Agent Nas’. The objectives of the study are to describe the translation techniques used in translating the culinary specific terms in each subtitle version and to explain the influence of the translation techniques used towards the accuracy, acceptability, and the readability of the culinary specific term translation. The study is a product, context, and participant-oriented translation research based on qualitative paradigm that employs a case study model. The data collection techniques are document analysis and focus group discussion and the data technique analysis adopt the principles of ethnography manifested in the use of domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis as well as finding cultural values. The result of the study shows that the two subtitlers have different frequency level in using the techniques and that the techniques used affect the quality of the culinary term translation. The most obvious distinction is that Siberian resorts to many pure borrowings compared to Agent Nas. This translates to a good score of accuracy, but potentially reduce the level of acceptability of the translation. In addition, Agent Nas resorts to annotation technique that is meant to improve the understanding of the viewers while Siberian does not. All in all, the overall translation quality of culinary terms produced by the two subtitlers is almost equal with Agent Nas version slightly better than Siberian.Keywords: culinary specific term translation; translation techniques; translation quality; subtitleAbstrak. Penelitian ini berusaha untuk mengungkap fenomena dua versi terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner yang berbeda dalam film ‘Chef’, yakni versi subtitle ‘Siberian’ dan versi ‘Agent Nas’. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan istilah khusus kuliner pada masing-masing versi subtitle dan menjelaskan dampak penggunaan teknik penerjemahan tersebut terhadap tingkat keakuratan, keberterimaan, dan keterbacaan terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian penerjemahan yang berorientasi pada produk, konteks, dan partisipan yang berdasarkan pada paradigma kualitatif yang berbentuk studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah analisis dokumen dan diskusi kelompok fokus dan teknik analisis data yang digunakan menerapkan prinsip etnografi dalam bentuk analisis dokumen, taksonomi, komponensial, serta menemukan tema budaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bawha dua penerjemah tersebut memiliki tingkat frekuensi penggunaan teknik penerjemahan yang berbeda dan teknik yang digunakan berdampak pada kualitas terjemahan yang dihasilkan. Perbedaan yang paling mencolok adalah penggunaan teknik peminjaman murni oleh Siberian jauh lebih sering dilakukan dibandingkan dengan Agen Nas. Namun demikian, Agent Nas juga ditemukan menggunakan teknik anotasi yang dimaksudkan untuk memudahkan penonton untuk memahami terjemahan sedangkan Siberian sama sekali tidak menggunakannya. Secara garis besar, kualitas keseluruhan terjemahan istilah khusus kuliner yang dihasilkan oleh kedua versi subtitle hampir sama dengan nilai Agent Nas sedikit lebih tinggi dari Siberian. Abstract

Publishing research article into a journal has recently been an obligation for many academicians around the globe. This demanding task require proper competence of written academic discourse. This study explored the difficulties faced by the students in the process of writing and submitting their articles into journals and how their competence of academic discourse played a role in this process. The data were gathered through the questionnaire and interview of ten Indonesian master students who were selected based on their writing and submitting research paper experience. Being a qualitative study, the findings of this study are presented and discussed narratively. The findings revealed a positive view of the students’ basic competence of the written academic discourse for publication. Four difficulties were investigated as being experienced by the majority of the participants. Pedagogical implications are offered for the students for their future research publication.

Abstract

There has been an increasing demand for postgraduate students to publish their scholarly work as one of their graduation requirements. The present study attempted to explore the graduate students’ challenges in writing for scholarly publication seen from the perspectives of discursive challenges. This qualitative research employed case study to disclose the participants’ perceived constraints. The students participated in this study three final-year female students undertaking their master’s degree in English Language Teaching (ELT) in a university in Central Java. Data were garnered from semi-structured interviews. The findings discovered the discursive challenges that the participants faced in writing for scholarly publication including accuracy, genre understanding, interference of L1 to L2 production, and lexical items. It is expected that this study provides new insights for EAP design for higher education context so that the program addresses the needs of the graduate students.
