Teaching Listening Comprehension by Using Graphic Organizer to the Students with High Anxiety Level Diah Astriyanti

Abstract

This study was conducted to increase the third-semester students’ listening comprehension in IKIP PGRI Pontianak who have high listening anxiety. The quantitative research method was used and the data were analyzed by using the one-way ANOVA in two groups of students with high listening anxiety in 10 meetings. The experiment group taught by using a Graphic Organizer before the listening session. Meanwhile, the other group was taught by using Advance Organizer in form of narrative text before the listening session. The result of the study indicates that Fo (3.609) is lower than Ft (3.419). It can be concluded that Graphic Organizer is not effective in teaching listening comprehension to students with high listening anxiety.

Abstract

Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mengadakan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat yaitu membangun kemandirian peserta didik Kampung Inggris Parit Baru dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris menggunakan pengajaran eksplisit dan bimbingan tutor. Kampung Inggris melibatkan 137 peserta didik. Kegiatan ini dilakukan dari tanggal 22, 29 Pebruari, 7 dan 14 Maret 2020 di Kantor Desa Parit Baru, Kubu Raya. Catatan lapangan yang telah dianalisis secara tematik menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran eksplisit dan bimbingan tutor membantu membangun kemandirian peserta didik dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa program pengabdian kepada masyarakat telah berhasil membantu membangun kemandirian preserta didik dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris bagi pemandu wisata di Desa Jeruju Besar,  Kabupaten Kubu Raya sehingga dapat memperkenalkan wisata  yang ada di kawasan Equator Park.  Peserta yang terlibat dalam kegiatan pelatihan ini berjumlah 20 orang terdiri dari pemandu wisata dan pelaku wisata di kawasan Equator Park. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan dalam pengabdian ini adalah pelatihan Bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Hasil dari mengikuti pelatihan ini, para pemandu wisata dapat meningkatkan kemampuan dan kepercayaan dirinya dalam berinteraksi menggunakan bahasa Inggris aktif dengan turis asing. Selain itu, para pemandu wisata di kawasan Equator Park ini mendapatkan pengetahuan tentang bagaimana pentingnya dan pengaruhnya dalam menjalin komunikasi terhadap wisatawan asing. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari nilai rata-rata hasil posttest, yaitu sebesar 76.8. Dengan demikian para pemandu wisata bisa mengoptimalkan potensi atau kemampuan dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research aims to explore what teaching strategies used by the teachers and the role of schools to enhance English communication skills at vocational schools. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through semi-structured interview, and documents. The participant of this research are English teachers and headmaster of vocational schools at SMK Negeri 4 Pontianak, SMK Negeri 2 Pontianak, and SMK SMTI Pontianak. The interview was analyzed using thematic analysis and document as supporting the data of interview. The findings of this research indicate that teaching strategies to enhance English communication skills at vocational schools have been implemented, but their implementation has not been consistent. The findings of the study indicate that teaching strategies such as brainstorming, problem-based learning, simulation, large group discussions, role play, and presentations have been used by teachers to improve students' communication skills. However, their implementation has not been consistent across all schools. In addition, the role of schools through policies, programs, and supporting facilities is considered to be less than optimal in meeting students' English communication needs. This study emphasizes the importance of teacher readiness and the role of schools in meeting student needs, which need to be strengthened to encourage more effective and sustainable improvement in English communication skills. Therefore, it is recommended that further research examine teaching strategies that encourage active interaction and contextual communication, as well as evaluate the role of schools in designing consistent policies, programs, and supporting facilities for English communication learning.
