Abstract

This report presents an investigation on how to improve the current dual-band antenna to enhance the better result of the antenna parameters for energy harvesting application. Besides that, to develop a new design and validate the antenna frequencies that will operate at 2.4 GHz and 5.4 GHz. At 5.4 GHz, more data can be transmitted compare to 2.4 GHz. However, 2.4 GHz has long distance of radiation, so it can be used when far away from the antenna module compare to 5 GHz that has short distance in radiation. The development of this project includes the scope of designing and testing of antenna using computer simulation technology (CST) 2018 software and vector network analyzer (VNA) equipment. In the process of designing, fundamental parameters of antenna are being measured and validated, in purpose to identify the better antenna performance.

Abstract

Microwave is the most popular sensor in industrial applications for detecting material characterization. Over the past decade, microwave sensor is high demand, especially in medical for detecting cancer in the human body, agriculture for detecting moisture of soil, and freshness in the food industry. The previous study has shown that the high demands of the microwave sensor in industrial applications make researchers always think of new ideas to design microwave sensors to improves accuracy and sensitivity. This paper reviews an investigation of material characterization of recent developments of a planar sensor for various contaminants and parameter value of solid, liquid, and powder as material under test (MUT). Planar resonator sensor enhances the weakness of conventional sensors in bulky size, required a large volume of samples, and high cost. This planar sensor will differentiate MUT properties based on scattering parameters at various operating frequencies. The framework presented in this review paper includes new developments in resonator structure as well as advanced design of potential future research work. Previous studies will be objectively analysed and compared in order to gain a better understanding of microwave resonant sensors and to develop innovative concepts to further enhance application research involving material characterization.

Abstract

This paper compares two single balanced mixer designs for ultra-wideband  (UWB) of RF front-end at frequencies ranging from 3 to 10 GHz. The proposed mixer designs use two balun topologies for varying mixer performances. Thus, Design 1 incorporates a Coupled Line Balun and Design 2 incorporates a Branch Line Balun. Both designs make use of Skyworks' SMS7621 Schottky diodes, which have a low junction capacitance, and the Rogers RO4350B substrate, which has a dielectric constant of 3.48. The Coupled Line Balun (Design 1) offers a total length of 88 mm, whereas the Branch Line Balun (Design 2) creates a more compact structure with 48 mm. This paper's thorough analysis and measurements show each design's benefits and drawbacks in terms of circuit size and performance. The simulations and measurement results of both designs generally showed a conversion loss of less than 20 dB and LO-RF isolation of better than 50 dB.
