Abstract

In this paper, a switchable bandstop to allpass filter using cascaded transmission line SIW resonators is proposed. The switchable filter is performed by the switchable cascaded transmission line SIW resonators using discrete PIN diodes. Therefore, it can be used for rejecting any unwanted frequencies in the communication systems. The proposed filter design is operated in K-band and targeted for millimeter wave front end system for 5G telecommunication. Two filter designs with different orientation (design A and B) are investigated for the best performance and compact size. As a result, design B is the best by giving a maximum attenuation of 39.5 dB at 26.4 GHz with the layout size of 33×30 mm.

Abstract

The use of a ground penetrating radar (GPR) system that operates at low frequencies allows the detection of embedded objects underground from the earth’s surface deeper than high frequency. However, the output signal generated from the system using pulse modulation (PM) technique and high-frequency carrier, has many high ripple signals consequently resulting in a blurry image. Nevertheless, this ripple signal can be minimized by reprocessing the signal using an envelope detector method. In this study, an envelope detection technique called ArJED© asynchronous full-wave (AFW) was used in the GPR system and was tested at a frequency range from 0.06 to 0.08 GHz. A dipole antenna has been used as an embedded object detection sensor of the GPR system. The detection system of embedded objects involves four depths starting with 2 cm depth, 5 cm, 7 cm, and 20 cm. A comparison of embedded object images before and after the application of the envelope detection technique was done and proved that the proposed envelope detection technique has produced a clearer radargram image of the GPR system.

Abstract

This paper presents a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) switch that is integrated with a thin rectangular patch switchable defected ground structure (DGS). It is a novel technology for obtaining wideband and high isolation for the SPDT switch in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) telecommunications due to the usage of switchable DGS with bandstop and bandwidth enhancement capabilities. A wideband and high isolation are required for the switchable DGS SPDT switch to operate optimally in mm-wave frequency ranges, as well as to reduce the effect of leakage signal on both the transmitter and receiver connected to the SPDT switch and hence improve system efficiency and signal integrity. The SPDT switch design was combined with two small rectangular patches switchable DGSs that could switch between bandstop and allpass responses using biasing diodes on the DGS. As a result, the suggested SPDT switch with the switchable DGS had 6 dB of insertion loss and high isolation of more than 25 dB with wideband isolation of 25.24% fractional bandwidth, which was consistent with the simulation results. Furthermore, the isolation magnitude is doubled compared to the conventional SPDT switch. This work demonstrates that integrating switchable DGS into discrete SPDT switches provides a practical solution for realizing wideband, high-isolation performance suitable for 5G mm-wave where compactness and bidirectional reconfigurability is increasingly essential for sustainable RF front-end systems.
