Abstract

This article will basically discuss the development of the structural functional theory in particular that has been developed by Francesca Cancian, commonly known as the Functional Analysis of Change. The importance of using the analysis is because basically people development is often analogous to the process of evolution; a change into a form of ?perfection?. Thus, after a discussion of the theoretical propositions then it will be applied to the case of social and cultural change during the Abbasid dynasty, especially in the era of Caliph al-Ma?mûn?s leadership. It is found that social and cultural systems at the time of Abbasid dynasty were very dynamic and steady so that the golden age can be achieved.

Abstract

This article examines the genetics of Islam in Indonesia, namely Javanese Islam. Through the lens of cross-cultural theology, this research aims to observe the dialogue and interaction between Hindu tradition and culture and Islamic religious practices and behaviors. Employing anthropological and sociological approach with an intensive library research method, this research found out that the style and behavior of Javanese Islam have resulted from the dialogue, interaction, negotiation, and synergy with Hindu (local) culture and traditions. The result also shows that Islam can harmonize and synergize its teachings with the local culture while maintaining its values or doctrines. Hence, Javanese Islam is better called Local Islam or Islam Nusantara rather than Syncretic Islam.

Abstract

The hadith concerning Hajj al-wada’, being the final utterance of Prophet Muhammad, has garnered significant attention from Hadith scholars, prompting various analyses of both its chain of narrators (sanad) and its content (matn). Focusing particularly on the matn aspect, scholars seek to delve into the deeper meaning embedded within the expressions or verbiage of the hadith, necessitating a thorough linguistic examination. This endeavor has given rise to the field of ma‘āni al-hadith, which centers its inquiry on the semantic nuances inherent within the text, whether textual or contextual. Within this contextual realm, pragmatic aspects take precedence, wherein the matn of the hadith is scrutinized through the lens of speech acts. In this article, we aim to explore the hadith of Hajj al-wada’ through the prism of one such pragmatic linguistic aspect: speech acts. This approach fundamentally analyzes the utterances or expressions -in this case, the matanof hadith hajj al-wada’- in light of the speaker’s and listener’s actions, encompassing locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. Through this investigation, we endeavor to illuminate the deeper layers of meaning embedded within this seminal hadith.

Abstract

The proliferation of social media has transformed online spaces into arenas of active religious persuasion, as evidenced by conversion movements organized around hashtags such as #hijrah and #SaveMaryam. This study addresses religious conversion in the era of cyber through a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of 68 purposively sampled content items drawn from Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and WhatsApp, published between 2021 and 2025, encompassing both Islamic da’wa and Christian cyber evangelism. The analysis integrates Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach, and Wodak’s discourse-historical framework with digital religion theory and Rambo’s model of religious conversion. Four principal discursive strategies are identified: authenticity discourse; accessibility discourse; community discourse; and crisis discourse. These strategies constitute an integrated “persuasive ecology” in which each reinforces the others to address the cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions of religious persuasion simultaneously. The findings demonstrate that cyber proselytism is not traditional religious persuasion transposed into digital form but a qualitatively new discursive formation shaped by platform affordances and algorithmic logics.

Abstract

This paper deals with the epistemic crisis of certainty in modern epistemology, which is provoked by the empirical scepticism of David Hume. Hume doubted the principles of causality and inductive reasoning so much that knowledge is only conceived as probabilistic and contingent mental representations and lacks a firm ontological basis. This results in strong object-subject and empirical reductionism. This study uses qualitative method based on literature study, by applying critical philosophical approach and conceptual analysis to the main texts of the two thinkers. The main finding is that Mullā Ṣadrā in the context of al-Ḥikmah al-Muta‘āliyah, reconstructs the basis of certainty of knowledge through the doctrines of aṣālat al-wujūd (the superiority of existence), tashkīk al-wujūd (the degree of existence), al-‘Ilm al-Ḥuḍūrī (knowledge of presence), Ittiḥād al-‘Āqil wa-al-Ma‘qūl (the oneness of the subject and object of knowledge) and al-ḥarakah al-jawhariyyah (substantial movement). Ṣadrā’s epistemology harmonizes reason (burhān), intellectual intuition (kashf), and revelation (naql), so that knowledge is no longer merely a mental representation, but rather an existential event that unites subject and object at a higher level of existence. This reconstruction has successfully addressed Hume’s skepticism and has initiated a fruitful dialogue between Islamic epistemology and contemporary modern epistemology.
