Abstract

This study attempts to review the religious life of multicultural society of Muslim-Hindus in Denpasar, Bali. Findings of the fieldwork reveal the prevalence of an ideal cooperation among religous communities in building harmony in religious life. This character constitutes an integral part of Balinese societal life. Building Bali Aga (Bali Sprouts Again) needs a long process and time through theological, ideological and socio-cultural dialectics. The local government and social institutions together with Balinese society have been struggling to maintain and protect the Hindu-inspired Balinese culture through preserving the tradition of menyama braya to establish a harmonious religious life. They also exhibit inclusive religiousity in social, cultural, economic, and educational spheres. It is with this openness that Muslim-Hindu community in Bali can live in a peaceful co-exisentence and respect each other.

Abstract

One of the special characteristic of religion is transcendent, holy, absolute and permanent due to the holy revelation of the divinity and culture is human creation in forms of relativity due to its dynamic characteristic. Human culture will take a sort of changing in accordance with the time and space they lived in. Human will have understanding in accordance with their capability and experience in responding and practicing dogma according to their belief. In this point, they try to return to their original form of being oneness or ummah wâh}idah either in social and theological fields. The concept of ummah wâh}idah is well known with the tawhîd movement focused on theological and social realm. This paper attempts to see the religious movement of tawhîd Muh}ammad in anthropological perspective. It aims to respond the exclusive religious understanding of some groups in Indonesia in threatening plurality and social integration. The paper suggests that the movement of tawhîd Muh}ammad is a theological and social movement. Theological movement maintains that all Semitic religions should be tied up with the idea of millah Ibrâhîm, not Islamic religion (aqîdah Islâmîyah) as many salafism argue in the recent days. Besides, the social movement of tawhîd Muh}ammad means that tawhîd could unite many groups and ethnics of Arab tribes to build a new face of civilization in more civilized and dynamic.

Abstract

Religious experience of multicultural society in Indonesia has frequently been characterized by conflict and violence in various regions. As a state having the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Indonesia has several challenges and problems of plurality, ethnicity, religion, and culture. However, each culture has it own local wisdom to overcome these challenges and problems. This article finds that the presence of religious life (Hindu-Muslim) in Denpasar Bali does not look like other regions in Indonesia, which is always covered by conflict and violence in the name of religion. Multicultural society in Denpasar Bali indicates ideal collaboration between Muslims and Hindus to build religious activities. It is an integral part of Balinese life and the Balinese friendly character to sprout back to Bali Glow (Bali Aga). It sure takes a long time to proceed through the dialectical theology, ideology, and socio-cultural processes. Together with social institutions, the local government had tried to maintain and protect the essence of Hindu Balinese culture, by preserving the tradition of Menyama Braya for the realization of harmonious religiosity.

Abstract

The article discusses gender issue which has still become a global discourse within 21st century. The discourse will always become an actual issue as it constantly emerges from women and community?s consciousness who find strategic discrepancy and injustice, in regard with the relation between men and women, in which they might lead to relational discrimination, subordination, stereotype, and inequality. The writer, at this point, attempts to bring about comparative analysis between two interpretation paradigms on gender issue promulgated by Nasr Hâmid Abû Zayd and Amina Wadud. Both people share a common academic apprehension when they observe backwardness of the Muslim women in many aspects of life (as a fully human agency) caused by patriarchy tradition, gender injustice, and problem of minority in the Muslim world. This has subsequently caused the two authors to reconstruct methodological paradigm of Quranic exegesis on gender issue in order to generate a just interpretation. They see the importance of having high social consciousness which properly considers women?s existence based on sacred values of humanity. However, this view faces obstacles from other Muslim scholars as they consider Zayd and Wadud heretics and have conducted what so-called ?an intellectual shirk?.

Abstract

Within the last decades, known to us as the century of spirituality, the world civilization has been murkily colored by the darkness and it has been caused by our sharp different view when we try to understand the meaning of religion including Islam. This has led to the absence of ?a bowl? of peace, justice, and equality for every person to freely express his or her socio-religious activities. To the exclusivists, for instance, Islam is blindly viewed as the sole religion that possesses absolute value of truth (absolutism). Consequently, this group sees that other religions possess no truth and, therefore, they must be obliterated. This group sees isl?m as a term to reject religious pluralism in Indonesia. On the other side, the inclusivists consider the truth of isl?m as the universal truth. In this regard, they argue that the truth of Islam as a religion is the sole truth, but the truth of isl?m cannot be monopolized only by certain religion. They further argue that other religions may also possess the truth of isl?m. Paying close attention to such different understanding of isl?m, this article attempts to re-read and re-analyze it from socio-cultural approach (or strictly speaking from philoso-phical and theological point of view).

Abstract

Studies on religious fundamentalism has re-drawn a serious attention from scholars after the ascalation of a series of religious violence in the name of religion, including in Indonesia. Several theories of political radicalization have been formulated. These theories ironically exert serious implication of stigmatization and over-generalization to Muslims in many parts of the world who have nothing to do with fundamentalist and radical Islam. This article attempts to problematize those theories and concepts of Islamic fundamentalism in Indonesia. This article argues that the definition of Islamic fundamentalism that many scholars have formulated do not work properly. The Indonesian discourses show that Islamic fundamentalism is often seen as movements or thoughts that respond and criticize the ideology of Islamic modernism. A common theory of Islamic fundamentalism in Indonesia divides Islamic fundamentalism into two kinds, namely radical fundamentalism such as Front Pembela Islam, and soft fundamentalism such as Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia and Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia. However, similarities between these two kinds of movement in terms of their views on secularization and democracy are ample so that such s definion is misleading. Keywords: concept of fundamentalism, radical fundamentalism, peaceful fundamentalism

Abstract

Abstract: Entering to modern era constitutes one big challenge in which beside it is considered as a resurrection era through which it is fully engaged with religious thoughts, social conflict happened in many places is also suspected as another factor coming along with it. Thought religion is not the only factor, but religious thought plays important role with the result that the world comes into ongoing critical period. They have arrived to primordial solidarity area which constitutes the weak point of the life of the nation. The royalty of religious followers toward their religion in negative ways tend to bear such exclusive ideology which produces internal conflict among interreligious people. As Indonesia today’s condition, different understanding and religious practice become a big trouble which is hard to unite so that it causes unforthcoming political flames. Fundamental problem about that is a problem related to different understandings toward state and religion relationship. In one hand, it said that religion constitutes part of state but in other hand, both religion and state are different instead of undivided things. Looking at such phenomenon, this writing will try to read and to analyze the ideology of Islamic political movement in Indonesia since old order, new order and post reformation.
