Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The utilization of land together between trees and crops is one of the strategies in land rehabilitation program in Indonesia. High pressure from people living surrounding the forest land required the forest managers to invite more participation from the people in managing the forest land. Agroforestry pattern with certain tree species chosen by forest managers together with certain crops preferred by the communities may become the solution for all stakeholders’ interests in a high-pressured forest area. One of the considerations in agroforestry development is economic aspect. This study aims to analyze the financial feasibility of agroforestry pattern auri (Acacia auriculiformis) and peanut, pigeon pea, and corn in Batulanteh forest management unit (FMU) in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. The feasibility assessment criteria used in this study were Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR). The result of this study showed that agroforestry pattern of auri with paddy, peanut, pigeon pea and corn is financially feasible with the NPV, IRR and BCR values are IDR14.607.837.-, 53 % and 1.51 respectively. Keywords: agroforestry, paddy, peanut, pigeon pea, corn, dry land

Abstract

In the forest economics literature, Faustmann formula is highly adopted for profit maximization problem in forest management, mostly in plantation forest. Stylized models of Faustmann formula to be applied in selective logging regime have also been studied extensively in multi-age and multi-species forest. In general, natural forest managers in Indonesia have not adopted the Faustmann formula in their management decisions. Sustainability aspect in natural forest management is applied based on silvicultural consideration, i.e. measuring residual stand that is able to be harvested in the next cutting cycle. This study aims to analyze the application of Faustmann formula in the current selective logging regime in Indonesia (i.e. TPTI), so that the natural forest managers may gain maximum profit and sustainable. This study is a qualitative research based on literature review. The results of this study show that under deterministic growth model (i.e. matrix transition model) and robust damage model (i.e. transition matrix with different damage proportions on each species and diameter class), the Faustmann formula can be applied for selective Logging regime in Indonesia. Keywords: Faustmann formula, selective logging, natural forest, Indonesia

Abstract

Forest plantation may contribute economically and socially as a provider of wood raw materials for industry and providing jobs for local people. In addition, forest plantation may also contribute as watershed protection and carbon sequestration. Projects on carbon sequestration from plantation forest can be conducted in two types: (1) afforestation and (2) lengthening forest rotation. One of the potential carbon markets operationalized in the field is voluntary market with Verified Carbon Standard mechanism. This study aimed to analyze the optimal rotations of gmelina forests on two carbon projects: lengthening rotation and afforestation. The method used in this study was by using Hartman model ( i.e. Faustmann) by maximizing profit with the revenue source from timber and carbon sequestrationproject. The results of this study showed that carbon price will affect the optimal rotation for lengthening forest rotation of VCS project. Meanwhile, for VCS afforestation project, carbon price had no effect on the optimal rotation on gmelina forest. The NPV value of afforestation project was relatively higher than that of NPV value of lengthening forest rotation project, since the amount of carbon that can be credited relatively higher in afforestation project.

Abstract

The utilization of land under tree stand in teak forest has been widely applied by Perhutani as a means to maintain the quality of teak tree and to give additional income to people living around the teak plantation. In general, the utilization of land under tree stand is by planting crops for limited duration. One of the crops planted under teak stands is papaya that is planted together with teak seedlings until 2 years. This study aims to analyze the feasibility of papaya cultivation under teak stands in Purwaharja Village, Banjar City. The analysis tools used include NPV (Net Present Value) and BCR (Benefit Cost Ratio). The results of this study show that the papaya cultivation under teak stands give NPV of IDR 20,072,606.- and BCR of 2.89. Therefore, the cultivation of papaya under teak stand is feasible to conduct.

Abstract

Harvested wood product is one of the carbon pools that must be considered in calculating carbon emission from forestry sector. There are several models of wood product retirement : linear, logistic, and exponential. The type of model applied inthe calculation of wood product pool influence the estimated amount of carbon stored in wood product, and hence also influence the recommended management regime of a plantation forest. This study analyzed  how different models of wood product oxidation produced different estimates of carbon stored in sengon wood product and caused different management recommendation of sengon plantation. The models used in this paper include linear (VCS model), exponential (IPCC, 2006), and logistic (Miner model). The focus of the study is to evaluate only long term wood product that is oxidized up to 100 years. The study showed that the lowest carbon stored  from sengon  wood product are those estimated by linear, logistic, and exponential respectively. VCS model with 20 years linear decay is conservative.

Abstract

Forests play an important role in climate change mitigation by absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Additional revenue from carbon credits may change the optimal management of plantation forest. This research aims to analyze the optimal rotation of joint production of timber and carbon sequestration of sengon stand in Java. The method used in this research is the profit maximization of forest stand obtained from wood sales and carbon credits (i.e. Hartman rule as a modification of Faustmann rule). The results of this study showed that (1) the biological rotation of sengon forest in site quality (SQ) III and IV are 6 and 5 years respectively, (2) Financial rotations of sengon forest in SQ III and IV are 8 and 6 years respectively, and (3) Additonal income from carbon sales in afforestation project will not lengthen the optimal rotation of sengon plantation.
